The Watch

Here we have a 2005 Oris Big Crown Automatic Day Date Ref. 7500 with a curvaceous 40mm brushed stainless steel case that curves over your wrist with thick angled lugs, and a lug-to-lug length of 48.5mm and a case thickness of 10mm ensures a comfortable fit. On the right side is the large signed crown that sits slightly recessed into the case, a polished and brushed smooth bevelled-edged bezel holds a flat crystal above a matte black dial. An outer minute chapter ring is precisely executed with small Arabic numerals and lume pips, large Deco numerals are printed in white marking the hours, under the 12 we have a framed day window, and at 6 o’clock a framed date window. Slender white baton hands are complemented by a white tapered sweeping second hand, at 6 o’clock we have the Oris motif, “Automatic” curves on the left and “25 Jewels” curves on the right completing this vintage-inspired timepiece. On the reverse a screw-down exhibition case back, inside an automatic Oris Cal 635, 25 jewels, with the characteristic red rotor. The watch comes paired with an Oris 20mm stainless steel bracelet with a signed deployment clasp.

Personal Note

I often talk about "value for money" and when asked where you can find that in Swiss watches I regularly recommend Oris, whether that be modern and brand new at retail or pre-owned like this reference 7500, they offer value across the board and are still relatively slept on by collectors! This model is the perfect example of that, a unique design and great Day/Date layout, looks great on and off the wrist and can be had under £500!

The Brand

Oris was founded by Paul Cattin and George Christian in the Swiss town of Hölstein.  They bought a factory and signed a contract with the mayor in 1904. Initially making pocket watches in 1925 they started to add bracelets to their pocket watches which soon transitioned into the wristwatch. By 1929, they had a total of six factories. At the end of the 1960s, Oris became one of the largest watch companies in the world, producing approximately 1.2 million timepieces a year. Dr Rolf Portmann and Ulrich W. Herzog headed a management buyout from Swatch Group in 1982. Unhappy with the way the Group was running things. Oris SA was born as an independent Swiss watch brand. 2002 saw their distinctive Red Rotor become an Oris registered Trademark.
