Description

Here we have a 2001 Revue Thommen Cricket Alarm, which was originally released in 1947 and has a long history of being presented to all US presidents from Harry Truman, including the Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev. This interesting movement patent was owned by MSR Holdings, which allowed both Vulcain and Revue Thommen to produce Cricket watches. Montres Vulcain SA was founded in 2001, bringing together both brands under one roof. The 35mm polished stainless steel case comfortably curves over your wrist thanks to the fancy tapered horn lugs. Its curved flanks lead to a lug-to-lug length of 42.5mm and a case thickness of 12mm. Down the right side, we have the crown to wind the Cricket alarm and set it, and a signed crown with knurling for grip in the centre. The stepped bezel holds a domed acrylic crystal above a striking cream dial. Applied polished gold-toned Roman numerals at the cardinal points and arrowhead indexes with Tritium pips mark the hours. An inner seconds and minute ring is useful for setting the alarm, slender polished gold toned sword hands filled with Tritium, a blue painted arrow tipped hand to indicate the Alarm and a tapered second hand sit majestically in the centre of the intricate guilloché dial, at noon we have the Revue Thommen motif and at 6 o’clock ‘Cricket’ completes this vintage inspired timepiece. On the reverse, a screw-down case back engraved with the details of the watch. Inside a manually wound Revue Cal. RT80, 17 jewels, beating at a leisurely 18,000 beats per hour, fitted with two independent barrels, one for the alarm and the other for the watch, the patented movement was originally released in 1947. It comes paired with a well-suited 19mm leather strap and the original pin buckle. This watch is sold with its original Revue Thommen box and paperwork, including its original purchase receipt.

Points of Mention

This watch is sold with its original Revue Thommen box and paperwork, including its original purchase receipt. It comes paired with an 18mm well-suited leather strap and its original buckle. The watch is from July 2001 and is sold in worn condition, but very fair, with an even patina on the dial as shown. The watch comes with our 12-Months NON-Waterproof Warranty.

Personal Note

This interesting movement patent was owned by MSR Holdings, which allowed both Vulcain and Revue Thommen to produce Cricket watches. Montres Vulcain SA was founded in 2001, bringing together both brands under one roof, and this wonderful example we have here comes with its box, paperwork and original receipt showing the date of purchase to be in July 2001, so an early example during the transition of both brands. If you are in the market for a lovely alarm watch that doesn't break the bank, look no further, you have found it!

About Revue Thommen

The first Grand Seiko debuted in Tokyo in 1960; the reference 3180 was made by Suwa Seikosha. Rather than sending its 25 Jewels Chronometer movement to the Swiss to be tested, Seiko decided to do the testing themselves; the European Chronometer Official Association believed that a chronometer-rated watch had to be independently tested to be awarded that designation. Seiko watches were not independently tested, so they could not be chronometers. The ECOA did what irritated watchmakers did; they wrote a stern letter to Seiko requesting that the designation of Chronometer on Grand and King Seiko watches stop. Seiko obliged and ceased using the "Chronometer" on their watches. In response, the Japanese Chronometer Authorisation Association was started in 1968 as an independent group to test timepieces to chronometer standards; the Association was short-lived: due to the rise of quartz watches, it closed in 1983. Today, Grand Seiko movements are tested over 17 days in 6 positions compared to COSC testing over 15 days in 5 positions. In 1985, Suwa Seikosha became Seiko Epson Corporation; in 2017, Seiko announced that Grand Seiko would become an independent brand.
