The Watch

Here we have a 2000s Oris Big Crown Complication Moonphase with a 38mm brushed and polished stainless steel case that curves over your wrist with thick tapered lugs, a lug-to-lug length of 47mm and a case thickness of 11.5mm ensuring a comfortable fit. Down the right side, we have the indented pushers to change the day and 24-hour registers and a large signed crown in the centre, on the left side at 10 o’clock an indented pusher to change the date register. A gold-toned PVD-coated coin-edged bezel holds a domed plexi crystal above a striking and very stylish guilloche textured silver dial, an outer minute track is precisely executed with lume pips at the hour surrounding applied rose gold-toned Arabic numerals marking the hours, at 3 o’clock a day register, at 6 o’clock a 24-hour register and at 9 o’clock a date register, each detailed with concentric circular patterns and a rose gold-toned tapered hand, at 12 o’clock we have the Moonphase crescent with inspiring night sky images and a guilloche pattern, elegant rose gold-toned Cathedral hands are filled with lume, at 12 o’clock we have the Oris motif and “Automatic” printed underneath completing this stunning travellers timepiece. On the reverse a screw-down exhibition case back showcasing the automatic Oris Cal. 581, 17 jewels, beating at 28,800 beats per hour, this movement has a full calendar module built on top of the ETA 2688 / 2671 and has the distinctive red Oris rotor. Personal Note

Oris has always been a brand I admire dearly, especially as my first true Swiss watch was an Oris too. This early Big Crown Complication Moonphase in 38mm offers undeniable value for money, the complication provided and the overall design, all by a Swiss brand with true history and heritage, it's incredible! It also looks just as great on a nice leather strap as it does the bracelet.

The Brand

Oris was founded by Paul Cattin and George Christian in the Swiss town of Hölstein.  They bought a factory and signed a contract with the mayor in 1904. Initially making pocket watches in 1925 they started to add bracelets to their pocket watches which soon transitioned into the wristwatch. By 1929, they had a total of six factories. At the end of the 1960s, Oris became one of the largest watch companies in the world, producing approximately 1.2 million timepieces a year. Dr Rolf Portmann and Ulrich W. Herzog headed a management buyout from Swatch Group in 1982. Unhappy with the way the Group was running things. Oris SA was born as an independent Swiss watch brand. 2002 saw their distinctive Red Rotor become an Oris registered Trademark.
