Description

This stunning 2000s Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Squadra Chronograph GMT 230.8.45 is clearly inspired by the geometric forms of the 1930s Art Deco era. The original Reverso concept was created by René-Alfred Chauvotis, and ‘Reverso’ was first introduced in 1930, designed for polo players who wanted to protect their watch dials while playing. Squadra is the Italian word for ‘Team’ and was introduced in 2006, replacing their sports model, the Reverso Gran'Sport. A 35mm stainless steel rectangular case features an elegant profile polished with deep horizontal lines, creating a classic look. The wide case gently slopes towards the lugs; its lug-to-lug length of 50.5mm and a case thickness of 12.5mm ensure a comfortable fit on the wrist. On the right side, we have the black rectangular chronograph pushers and a signed octagonal crown with deep knurling for grip in the centre. The flat rectangular sapphire crystal protects a dynamic black dial, an outer minute chapter ring is precisely executed, surrounding large Arabic numerals marking the hours, and at noon we have the date window, the recessed square registers consist of a 30-minute, 24- hour GMT and a 12-hour at 9 o’clock, each with a polished stick hand. Slender, faceted hands are complemented by a tapered red chronograph hand, set against an attractive horizontal patterned rectangle. The Jaeger-LeCoultre motif sits at 12 o’clock, and ‘Chronographe’ completes the dial. When you flip the watch, a flat sapphire crystal protects the automatic JLC Cal. 754, featuring 39 jewels that beat at 28,800 beats per hour, beautifully decorated in Côtes de Genève. The brushed case back is engraved ‘Reverso Squadra’ along with the details of the watch. It comes paired with its original 22mm JLC leather strap and JLC signed pin buckle. This watch is sold with an original JLC box, which is flaking as they usually do, and a 2022 JLC Service Record.

Personal Note

The Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso is commonly known as an elegant and refined dress watch, which is why this Squadra Chronograph GMT, reference 230.8.45, may feel a little jarring at first glance, but once on the wrist, you realise this Reverso format is incredibly versatile and works well even in this 'Sportier' modern way. René-Alfred Chauvotis created the original Reverso concept, and ‘Reverso’ was first introduced in 1930, designed for polo players who wanted to protect their watch dials while playing, so the model has always been a 'Sports watch'. I would not hesitate to book an appointment and try this one on for yourself!

About JLC

Antoine LeCoultre founded LeCoultre in 1833 in the small village of Le Sentier, Switzerland. By 1866, LeCoultre’s workshop had grown from home-run manufacturers spread across Switzerland to installing modern steam-driven machines to power the tools of all of the watchmakers, moving them from their homes and bringing them together, in one central unit. Now named LeCoultre & Cie, the company became the very first manufacturer in the Vallée de Joux, Switzerland. Antoine and his son Elie LeCoultre employed more than 500 watchmakers in-house. In 1903, Edmond Jaeger, a watchmaker in Paris making watches for the French Navy, challenged the Swiss manufacturers to produce an ultrathin movement. Jacques-David LeCoultre, Elie’s son, rose to the challenge and created the world’s thinnest pocket watch, equipped with the LeCoultre 146 calibre, measuring just 1.38 mm thick. René-Alfred Chauviet designed the Reverso, first introduced in 1930, specifically for polo players who wanted to protect their watch dials while playing polo. Over the following years, Jaeger and LeCoultre kept in touch, building a strong friendship, and in 1937, Jaeger-LeCoultre was founded. In 2013, they celebrated their 180th Anniversary. Creating iconic timepieces like the Reverso wristwatch and the brilliantly engineered Atmos clock. During the war years, the Mark VII pilot watches of the 1940s were so accurate that the Royal Air Force used them as aerial navigation instruments; later, they created the first automatic watch to house a power-reserve indicator in 1948 that was used by the US Army Air Corps. Jaeger-LeCoultre has developed and revolutionised the watch industry like no other manufacturer. Since 2000, they have been a fully owned subsidiary of the Swiss luxury group Richemont. This group includes Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, IWC Schaffhausen, Panerai, Piaget, Vacheron Constantin, Montblanc, Dunhill and Chloé.
