Description

Here we have a rare 2000s Girard Perregaux Laureato EVO3 Chronograph 80180, a modern interpretation of their 1975 sporty dress watch designed by Gerald Genta, who has incorporated elements found in his AP Royal Oak creation. Featuring a 44mm stainless steel tonneau-shaped case with graceful, perfectly transitioned brushed lines that draw the eye to the integrated strap; a lug-to-lug length of 50mm and a case thickness of 14.5mm give the watch an impressive wrist presence. On the right side, we have the screw-down chronograph pushers and a signed screw-down crown with deep knurling for extra grip, protected by crown guards. On the left side, a recessed pusher to set the date register. A black gasket supports an octagonal brushed smooth bezel that holds a flat sapphire crystal above a striking, black dial with a dynamic Clous de Paris (waffle) pattern. An outer Tachymeter scale chapter ring surrounds applied indexes marking the hours. At 12 o’clock, a date register, at 3 o’clock, a silver ringed running seconds, at 6 o’clock, a silver ringed 12-hour register and at 9 o’clock, a silver ringed 24-hour register. Broad-sword hands are filled with lume, an arrow hand indicating the passing chronograph minutes, and a tapered chronograph hand sits on top. At 12 o’clock, we have the printed Girard Perregaux motif that completes this stunning vintage-inspired, versatile traveller's sports watch. On the reverse, a screwed-down exhibition case back, inside an automatic GP Cal. GP033C0, 52 jewels, beating at 28,800 beats per hour; this movement features a base of the thin Cal. GP 3300 with a Dubois-Depraz module. It comes paired with its Girard Perregaux 25mm integrated brushed stainless steel bracelet secured with a push-button release deployant clasp; it will fit up to a 7.25-inch wrist. This watch is sold with its original Girard Perregaux Box, missing its cushion, signed swing tag and unsigned paperwork.

Personal Note

This is the incredible Girard Perregaux Laureato EVO3 Chronograph, reference 80180 in 44mm and believe me, this watch wears nothing like that 44mm dimension would lead you to believe. It wears far closer to a large 42mm thanks to the integrated design, and this is the reason why these are such great value in the market today. Most collectors see the 44mm label and move on, but book an appointment and try it on for yourself, and you'll be just as surprised as I have been!

About Girard Perregaux

The illustrious history of Girard-Perregaux dates back to the picturesque city of Geneva, Switzerland, in the year 1791. It was here that Jean-François Bautte, a master craftsman renowned for his exquisite pocket watches and goldsmithing skills, established his workshops, laying the groundwork for a brand that would become synonymous with luxury and precision. One of its most celebrated creations, the historic Tourbillon adorned with three stunning gold bridges, garnered prestigious recognition when it was awarded a gold medal at the 1889 International Exposition in Paris, shortly after its debut. A significant turning point in the brand's evolution occurred in 1906 when Constant Girard-Gallet acquired the Bautte company from its owner, Jacques Bautte. This pivotal merger led to the birth of the modern Girard-Perregaux, as the name itself was officially established in 1856 in the renowned watchmaking town of La Chaux-de-Fonds. This branding emerged from the union of Constant Girard and Marie Perregaux, marking the beginning of a legacy that continues to thrive. In 1965, Girard-Perregaux made waves in horological innovation by designing the first mechanical movement with an extraordinarily high frequency, featuring a balance that beat at an impressive 36,000 vibrations per hour, known as the Gyromatic HF. Luigi (affectionately known as Gino) Macaluso acquired Girard-Perregaux in 1992 alongside Daniel Jean Richard, creating the Sowind Group SA. In 1998, Macaluso received the prestigious “Esprit d’Enterprise-industrie” GAIA award, widely regarded as a benchmark in the Swiss watch industry. This award recognises excellence and innovation in watchmaking. In 1999, the company further solidified its heritage by inaugurating the Girard-Perregaux Museum near its headquarters in Villa Marguerite, showcasing the brand's storied past and artistry. Gino passed away in 2010. Fast-forward to 2012: Girard-Perregaux celebrated its creative spirit by launching the Le Corbusier Watch Trilogy, a remarkable tribute to the legendary architect whose designs have left an indelible mark on the world of architecture. In a strategic collaboration, 2021 saw Girard-Perregaux partner with the prestigious luxury car manufacturer Aston Martin, combining the realms of haute horlogerie and high-performance automotive excellence. However, a significant shift occurred in 2022 when the French luxury group Kering sold off its ownership stake in Sowind Group SA, the parent company of Girard-Perregaux, through a management buyout, marking a new chapter in the brand's rich narrative.
