The Watch
The Tudor trademark was first registered in 1926 by Swiss watchmaking company “Veuve de Philippe Hüther” on behalf of Hans Wilsdorf, the founder of Rolex watches. Wilsdorf took it over himself in 1936. Just after the second world war, Hans Wilsdorf Founder of Rolex knew that the time had come to expand and give the Tudor brand a proper identity of its own. Thus, on 6 March 1946, he created the “Montres TUDOR S.A.” company, specialising in models for both men and women. Rolex guaranteed the technical, aesthetic and functional characteristics, along with the distribution and after-sales service.
This 1996 Tudor Prince OysterDate 74033 has a 34mm Oyster case in 316L stainless steel. Its polished sides and brushed tops taper at drilled lugs. A lug to lug length of 41mm and a thickness of 9mm ensures a comfortable fit on the wrist. A screw-down twin lock signed gold crown on the right. An 18ct gold fluted bezel holds a flat crystal with a cyclops at 3 o’clock. The champaign dial has tritium tipped gold baton indexes marking the hours. At 3 o’clock a date window with a cyclops magnification. Gold baton hands have tritium infill. On the reverse, a coin-edged screw-down case back. Inside an Automatic ETA 2824-2, 25 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour. The movement has been in production since 1982 and was based on the Eterna Cal. 1427. The balance wheels are made from Glucydur instead of Nickel and a hairspring and mainspring made from Niravox. Glucydur is an alloy made up of beryllium, copper, and iron; Niravox is an alloy with anti-magnetic properties. Fitted on a 19 mm leather strap. Comes with a Tudor presentation box.
Personal Note
The condition of this example is insane, take a look at our macros and it is as close to how it would have looked coming out of the factory in 1996! The perfect birth year watch for someone born in 1996 or for anyone looking for a more affordable bimetal watch by a highly regarded brand! I wouldn't overlook this one, prices have only been increasing year on year and show no signs of slowing down.
