Description

Here we have a 1996 Nomos Orion 35mm Manual Black Dial Early Ref 332 featuring a curvaceous 35mm polished stainless steel case that sits comfortably on your wrist, with the signature long, flowing, and drilled lugs leading to a lug-to-lug length of 44.5mm and an incredibly slender case thickness of just 7mm. The Orion line is celebrated for its organic, curvaceous geometry, offering a softer and more fluid aesthetic than its architectural siblings. At 3 o’clock, a polished crown with a coin edge provides an easy grip for daily winding. A thin, smooth, polished bezel holds a beautifully domed sapphire crystal, creating a continuous, unbroken line with the case flanks. Beneath the glass lies a captivating, galvanised anthracite black dial. An outer printed minute track surrounds stamped, minimalist gold stick indices marking the hours. Gold-plated baton hands sweep smoothly across the dial, while a recessed, concentric circular-patterned sub-seconds register sits cleanly at 6 o’clock, completing this pure expression of mid-century minimalism. At noon, the early-generation, clean Nomos Glashütte motif anchors the layout. On the reverse, a solid stainless steel case back protects a fascinating piece of brand history: a Swiss-made, manually wound ETA Calibre 7001 movement. Beating at a traditional 21,600 beats per hour, this ultra-thin, 17-jewel ebauche represents the foundation of Nomos's early years before they moved to full in-house independence. It comes paired with a premium 19mm strap and a pin buckle. This watch is sold with its original NOMOS presentation box and paperwork.

Personal Note

It's not often you come across these really early Nomos references, especially from the 1990s, and I think this Orion is a particularly lovely example. The combination of that deep black dial, gold hands and wonderfully slim case is just brilliant. It's such a simple design, but that's exactly what makes it work so well. At just 7mm thick, it wears beautifully on the wrist too. I also love the fact that this dates back to the early days of Nomos, before they started producing their own movements. It's a fascinating little piece of the brand's history, and for the money, I genuinely think it's hard to ignore. A fantastic watch with plenty of charm. Snap it up and add it to your collection today!

About Nomos

Nomos was founded in 1990, just after Germany’s reunification happened with the fall of the Berlin Wall and the USSR's collapse. Based in the Glashutte region, it takes inspiration from the Bauhaus design movement. To have Glashutte on the dial, Nomos has to meet stringent quality standards. They must create at least 50% of the watch calibre in Glashütte to receive the title of being a true Glashütte watch. They only use in-house manufactured movements, built up to 95% in the region, surpassing that requirement.
