Description

Here we have a 1992 Rolex Datejust 36mm 16234. Released as a timeless cornerstone of luxury horology, it was produced by the iconic Swiss manufacturer to celebrate the perfect balance of everyday versatility and classic elegance. This striking timepiece features a 36mm 904L stainless steel case with a refined brushed-and-polished finish. The case features a slender, classic, contoured profile and a structural 18ct white gold fluted bezel that catches the light with every wrist movement, offering a comfortable lug-to-lug length of 43mm and a slim thickness of 11.5mm for a balanced, sophisticated presence on the wrist. A signed screw-down Twinlock crown. The standout feature of this model is its patina'd, unique dial that reflects light and looks unlike most dials you would have seen before. The layout features a classic date window at 3 o'clock, where the instantaneous date change appears under the magnifying cyclops lens. Long, elegant baton hands and applied baton indices are filled with tritium luminescence for sharp legibility in dark environments. Protecting this complex design is a flat sapphire crystal with a cyclops magnifier over the date. On the reverse, a solid screw-down caseback. Inside beats the automatic Rolex Cal. 3135. This chronometer-certified 31-jewel mechanical calibre operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour and features a bidirectional self-winding perpetual rotor known for its legendary reliability and precision. The watch comes paired with an integrated 20mm bespoke stainless steel Jubilee bracelet that tapers into a branded folding clasp, 20 links (minus two from full). This example also comes with its original box and paperwork.

Points of Mention

This watch is sold with its Rolex box, swing tag and paperwork. Coming fresh from service and a New crystal. The watch comes paired with its polished and brushed Rolex 20mm Jubilee bracelet, secured with a signed folding clasp (20 links, minus two from full), and will fit up to a 7.15-inch wrist. The watch is from September 1992 and is in worn condition, but is overall fair for its age, with a crazy dial patina, as you can see. A full case and bracelet refurb can be provided at an additional cost. The watch comes with our 12-Months NON-Waterproof Warranty.

Personal Note

What immediately drew me to this Datejust was the dial. At some point in its life, it appears to have experienced a small amount of moisture ingress that was thankfully dealt with quickly, but not before leaving behind this wonderfully unique patina. Rather than detracting from the watch, it has created a dial that looks unlike any other 16234 I've encountered. I have always had a soft spot for watches that wear their history honestly, and this is a perfect example. The dial serves as a reminder of the watch's journey over the last three decades, giving it a character and individuality that simply can't be replicated. In a world where so many vintage watches have had their stories polished away, I find examples like this far more interesting. Add this wonderful watch to your collection today!

About Rolex

In 1905, German-born Hans Wilsdorf and his brother-in-law Alfred Davis set up a company in London that imported Swiss movements which were installed in British cases and sold to jewellers who put their names on the dials. Recognising the potential for their brand, Wilsdorf created the brand name Rolex in 1908. In 1910, a Rolex became the first wristwatch to carry the Swiss Certificate of Chronometric Precision, awarded by the Official Watch Rating Centre in Bienne, Switzerland. Demand for Rolex watches rose swiftly, and British taxes on the Swiss movements Rolex used prompted Wilsdorf to move the business to Geneva, Switzerland, in 1919. With production costs lowered, Wilsdorf quickly set out to solve the age-old problem of moisture and dust entering a watch case and damaging the movement. The Rolex watchmakers came up with a fully sealed watch case, which Wilsdorf named the Oyster, and released to an appreciative audience in 1926. In 1931, Rolex introduced the first automatic winding wristwatch, giving it the legendary name Oyster Perpetual. In 1945, they released Datejust. The Datejust was the first watch to have the date jump instantaneously at midnight. The 1950s saw a whole lot of releases such as the Air-King (1958), the Explorer (1953), the Submariner (1953), the GMT Master (1955), the Day-Date (1956), the electromagnetic field resistant Milgauss (1956), the Lady-Datejust (1957) and the first Deep Sea model (1960). Wilsdorf’s death in 1960, saw ownership of Rolex S.A. (a collection of sub-companies) passed to the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation which was founded by Wilsdorf in 1945, the mission of which is simply to sustain Rolex S.A. indefinitely.
