The Watch
Here we have a 1990s Ulysse Nardin San Marco Big Date GMT 223-22; its high polished 37mm round stainless steel case gently curves over your wrist, and the stepped lugs add an interesting profile with a lug-to-lug length of 44mm and a thickness of 11.5mm ensure a comfortable fit. On the left side, you will find the pushers to change the GMT hour window in one-hour increments. On the right side is a protected signed crown with crown guards. A polished bezel holds a domed sapphire crystal, and its attractive matte grey dial has an outer minute track that is precisely executed and Arabic numeral indexes to mark the hours coated in Tritium. The big date-framed window sits off-centre on the right, and at 9 o’clock, the 24-hour Home Time disc jumps at the hour, and the watch features elegant sword hands filled with Tritium sitting majestically in the centre, a yellow-tipped sweeping second-hand completes the handset. At noon, we have GMT+- and the Ulysse Nardin Anchor motif sits at 6 o’clock, completing this sophisticated travel companion. On the reverse, a screwed-down case back with an embossed San Marco (Lion of St. Mark, the Evangelist) is in the centre, inside an automatic Ulysse Cal. UN-22 based on the ETA 2892-A2, 23 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour; this is the advanced version of the Cal. 2892; it has an "eccentric screw" for precise fine adjustment and has hacking seconds. The watch comes with its 19mm Ulysse Nardin leather strap secured by its pin buckle.
Personal Note
I have been fortunate enough to have had a few different Ulysse Nardin San Marco's through my hands in different configurations and ages, I am always amazed by how undervalued and underappreciated these models are with collectors. The functionality is incredible, the design is great and the value is undeniable, what more could we want... I would not hesitate to book an appointment and see this one in the metal for yourself, but be warned, you will likely walk out with it on your wrist and a big smile on your face!
The Brand
Ulysse Nardin was founded in 1846 in Le Locle, Switzerland, by Ulysse Nardin. They moved to their rue Jardin premises in 1865, where they still manufacture watches today. They designed the world's first-ever marine chronometer and won many awards in deck watches, chronometers, and wristwatches. In 1983, Rolf W. Schnyder took over the company. After his death, the company joined the Kering Group in 2014.
