The Watch

Here we have a 1990s Record "De Luxe" Chronograph Valjoux 7765 with a 38mm stainless steel case that curves over your wrist with tapered lugs, polished flanks and brushed top surfaces that lead to a lug-to-lug length of 45mm and a case thickness of 11mm ensuring a comfortable fit. Down the right side, we have the piston chronograph pushers and a slightly recessed crown in the middle. A 60-minute bezel has deep engraved gold-toned markers and numerals, holding a mineral crystal above a black dial. A gold-toned Tachymeter scale is precisely executed surrounding the applied lume-coated rounded baton indexes marking the hours, at 3 o’clock a framed date window, at 9 o’clock a gold-toned continuous seconds register and at 12 o’clock a  gold-toned 30-minute register, each with black numerals and concentric circular pattern, slender gold-toned baton hands are infilled with lume complemented by a tapered gold-toned chronograph hand. At 6 o’clock we have the Record de luxe motif, completing this attractive tool watch. On the reverse a screw-down case back, inside a manually wound Valjoux 7765, 17 jewels, beating at 28,800 beats per hour. The watch comes paired with a 19mm leather strap with a pin buckle.

Personal Note

I always find it amazing when I find watches like this, featuring a well-regarded Valjoux, a wonderful design and a great size at 38mm but can still be had well under £1,000! It goes to show great value in neo-vintage and vintage can still be found. I wouldn't hesitate if this one interests you, I suspect I won't have another for many years.

The Brand

Record was founded in 1903 in Tramelan, Switzerland, as the Record Dreadnought S.A. Producing triangular-shaped pocket watches. In 1944, the first watches with hammer automatic movements were produced, and rotor automatics were later produced in 1952. Record was one of the ‘Dirty Dozen’ watches selected by the British military to make ‘W.W.W.’ watches for their soldiers in WWII; these were delivered in 1945. Longines acquired Record in 1961, buying the majority shares interest. In 1991 Record sadly closed after Longines became part of the Swatch Group.
