The Watch
Here we have a 1990s IWC Flieger Chronograph IW3741 Quartz with a satin-brushed 36mm stainless steel case that curves over your wrist with thick tapered lugs, a lug-to-lug length of 43.5mm and a case thickness of 10.5mm give the watch an impressive comfortable fit. Down the right side, we have the chronograph pushers and a signed screw-down crown with deep knurling in the centre. A smooth bezel holds a domed sapphire crystal above a black dial. An outer minute track is precisely executed surrounding Arabic numeral indices marking the hours, at 3 o’clock a 12-hour register, at 6 o’clock a continuous seconds register and finally at 9 o’clock a 30-minute register, between the 4 and 5 a date window, slim baton hands are complemented by a tapered chronograph hand. At 12 o’clock we have the IWC motif. On the reverse a screw-down case back with deep engraving “IWC Der Flieger Chronograph, inside a Jaeger Le Coultre Cal.631 Mecha Quartz, a Quartz base that powers a mechanical chronograph. The watch comes paired with its original IWC 18mm stainless steel multi-link bracelet with a butterfly clasp, it will fit up to a 7.1-inch wrist. The watch comes with a later IWC presentation box.
Personal Note
This is a reference I have seen over the years and really wanted to stock, but they have become increasingly harder to find, especially with the bracelet, which for me is just as good as the watch itself! This 36mm reference IW3741 in quartz is amazing on and off the wrist, the bracelet hugs the wrist elegantly and the meca-quartz by JLC sweeps away beautifully, I wouldn't hesitate on this gem if you are interested!
The Brand
In 1867 Florentine applied for a European passport with the dream of creating watches using the American system of Watchmaking. This system was taken from the Federal Armories at Springfield and Harpers Ferry. Where armaments needed high-precision interchangeable parts, this was perfect to use in watchmaking and Florentine was a pioneer in introducing it to the Swiss. In 1868 Florentine and Charles Kidder ended up in Schaffhausen Switzerland. Originally called the company F. A Jones & Co which was later changed to IWC International Watch Company. In 1876 Florentine returned to the USA where he retired and sadly passed away in 1916. The spirit that he spent a lifetime perfecting carries on today in the modern IWC watches.
