The Watch
Here we have a 1990 Ebel Beluga QP 18ct Gold Perpetual Calendar with a curvaceous 36mm 18ct Yellow Gold case that curves over your wrist with hidden lugs and screws that hold the fitted 9mm strap, and a lug-to-lug length of 41mm and a case thickness of 10mm ensure a comfortable fit. On the right side is a recessed crown and pusher, on the left side we have two recessed pushers used to correct the perpetual calendar. A domed sapphire crystal sits above a white dial with an outer minute track that has small Arabic numerals surrounding applied gilt Arabic numerals marking the hours, at 12 o’clock a month and leap year sub-dial, at 3 o’clock a date register, at 6 o’clock a moonphase crescent with one lunar month scale and finally at 9 o’clock a day register, each slightly recessed, printed in black with a gilt stick hand. Gilt hands are complemented by a gilt sweeping second hand, at 6 o’clock we have an embossed Ebel motif. On the reverse an 18ct Gold case back secured with 4 screws, the details of the watch, Swiss hallmark and “Beluga” engraved into it, inside an automatic Ebel Cal. 129 (Modified ETA 2892-2). The watch comes paired with its original 9mm Ebel leather strap with an 18ct Gold deployant clasp and the watch comes with its Ebel presentation box, travel case and swing tag.
Personal Note
Ebel is rightfully in the collector's spotlight right now and being appreciated in the markets, but there are still models that are being overlooked and, in my opinion, are underappreciated! This Beluga QP 18ct Gold Perpetual Calendar in 36mm is exactly one of those. For the price, you will be hard-pressed to find a more unique, solid gold, perpetual calendar from a brand with true history and heritage! I wouldn't hesitate on this rare gem if you are interested and don't hesitate to book an appointment to try it on yourself.
The Brand
Eugene Blum and Alice Levy, husband and wife, joined their initials together (Eugène Blum Et Lévy) to form the brand name Ebel in 1911. Based in La Chaux de Fonds the company was taken over by their son, Charles in 1932, where he began to concentrate the business branching out overseas before Blum’s grandson Pierre Alain took over. It was at this point, in 1932 that Ebel began creating wristwatches for Cartier. Later Ebel became part of the LVMH Group and then Movado Group by the end of 2003.
