The Watch

Here we have a 1983 TAG Heuer Pilot Chronograph "1st Gen'' Quartz 230.206 with a 41.5mm brushed stainless steel case that curves over your wrist with flat-ended drilled lugs, and a lug-to-lug length of 46.5mm and a case thickness of 12mm ensures a comfortable fit. Down the right side, we have the short chronograph pushers and a signed crown in the centre with deep knurling for extra grip. The bidirectional bezel has the pilot's friend insert showing the slide rule calculator scales, pilots can effortlessly and accurately calculate fuel consumption, airspeed, time, and distance, as well as convert between miles and kilometres with the use of STAT, KM, and NAUT units. A domed crystal sits above a black dynamic dial, an outer rotating chapter ring has printed KM and MPH scales surrounding the minute track, tritium-coated dagger indexes mark the hours, and at 3 o’clock a framed date window with an inner magnifier, at 6 o’clock a 12-hour register, at 9 o’clock a 30-minute register and finally at 12 o’clock continuous seconds register, each recessed into the dial with a white stick hand, slender hands are filled with tritium and complemented by a tapered chronograph hand. At 3 o’clock we have the TAG Heuer motif and “Pilot Quartz 100 metres” printed underneath. On the reverse a screw-down case back with the details of the watch surrounding the TAG Heuer motif, inside a Quartz movement. The watch comes paired with its 24mm TAG Heuer stainless steel bracelet with a signed folding fliplock safety clasp which will fit up to a 7.15-inch wrist.

Personal Note

There is something alluring and interesting about 80s TAG Heuer, especially this rarely seen Pilot Chronograph "1st Gen" 230.206! The tritium dial and hands have aged beautifully, this really does remind me of a Navitimer in the best of ways but done slightly differently and in Quartz making it much more affordable. Definitely one to consider if you are a fan of TAG Heuer and this design.

The Brand

Edouard Heuer founded The Heuer Watch Company in 1860 in St. Imier, Switzerland. Their Chronographs have been the mainstay for Heuer and later TAG Heuer. Featuring many models and configurations, expanding the possibilities to the full. In 1958 Jack Heuer, Edouard’s son, joined the company. In 1962 the first generation of Autavia was launched. Famously worn in the 1970s by Formula One drivers such as Derek Bell, Jacky Ickx, Emerson Fittipaldi, Clay Regazzoni, Mario Andretti, and many more. LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton S.A. offered a bid in 1999 that was accepted by TAG Heuer.
