Description

Here we have a 1979 Bulova Automatic Day Date Deep Red Dial 35.5mm, featuring a classic 35.5mm stainless steel case that perfectly captures the transitional style of the late 70s. Bulova, a pioneer in American horology, was deeply integrated into the Swiss movement market by this era, frequently utilising high-quality ETA-based calibres to compete with the rising tide of quartz. The "N9" code on the case back confirms its 1979 production date. The lug-to-lug of 41.5mm and a slender case thickness of 10mm ensure an incredibly elegant and slim profile on the wrist, making it a versatile choice for both casual and formal wear. At 3 o’clock, a signed crown allows manual winding and quick setting of the day and date functions. A polished bezel holds a flat crystal over a striking, deep-red dial that shifts beautifully in the light. The dial is set with applied baton indexes, while a framed day-date window sits at the 3 o'clock position. Simple stick hands and a fine sweeping second hand maintain the dial's clean, sophisticated aesthetic. On the reverse, a screw-down case back bears the model reference and the serial number. Inside is the Automatic Bulova Cal. 1413.10, which is based on the robust and highly regarded ETA 2836-1, a 17-jewel high-beat movement known for its reliability and smooth sweep. The watch comes fitted with a 22mm leather strap, which, given the wide lug width for its case size, gives the watch a unique and commanding presence on the wrist.

Points of Mention

This watch is sold as "Watch Only" and, therefore, has no original Bulova box or paperwork. The watch comes fitted with a 22mm leather strap. The watch is from Circa. 1979 and is in worn vintage condition, with signs of wear across the watch, but overall, it is in fair condition, as you can see. The watch comes with our 12-Months NON-Waterproof Warranty.

Personal Note

The deep red dial is absolutely the star of the show here. It was likely refinished at some point in its life, but honestly, whoever did it absolutely nailed it. The quality is ridiculously high, and the colour works so perfectly with the late-70s case design that it genuinely feels like it could have left the factory this way. Especially with some of the deep colours we see in the catalogues today. Someone clearly had a very specific vision for this watch, and I’m very glad they followed through with it because the end result is fantastic. Add this wonderful vintage watch to your collection today!

About Bulova

Bulova Company was founded in 1875 by Joseph Bulova. Based in New York, they moved to 580 Fifth Avenue in 1920. In 1923, Bulova Watch Inc. was introduced. Max Hetzel, a Swiss engineer, was recruited in Bienne in 1950; he developed a number of prototypes, replacing the balance with a U-shaped tuning fork fitted between two transistors, which increased the watch's precision considerably. In 1952, Bulova started the development of the Accutron, the world's first fully electronic watch. NASA asked Bulova in 1960 to incorporate Accutron into its computers for the space program. Bulova Accutron timing mechanisms have become an essential part of the 46 missions of the U.S. Space Program. In 1962, Bulova was the first brand to bring a tuning fork-powered quartz movshowcasingingingingingingo the mass market with the slogan "The watch that hums." This slogan was powerful, as the watch indeed became known for its constant hum. This was due to the motor inside constantly working to provide a smooth sweep to the second hand.
