The Watch
Seikos history began in 1881 when Kintaro Hattori established the K. Hattori retail and repair store. In 1892 Seikosha was established to make wall clocks. 1895 saw the production of their first pocket watch. 1913 saw the launch of their first wristwatch, the Laurel. In 1924 the first Seiko was manufactured. Daini Seikosha (now Seiko Instruments Inc.) was established in 1937. Seiko was listed on the Tokyo stock exchange in 1949. The Suwa factory became independent and formed Suwa Seikosha Co., Ltd. (now Seiko Epson Corporation in 1959). In 1956 Seiko launched Marvel as their first true in-house-made watch; they continued to make this watch until 1959. Japan’s first chronograph watch was introduced for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics; it was called the Seiko Crown Chronograph mono-pusher. Not stopping there Seiko launched Japan's first true divers watch the Seiko Diver’s 150M fitted with the automatic Caliber 6217 which later was given the nickname “62MAS” by collectors. The company name was changed to the Seiko Corporation in 1990. Innovation at Seiko continues today with GPS Solar watches.
Here we have a 1978 Seiko Panda Chronograph Automatic 6138-8021 with a 41mm stainless steel case. The case curves over your wrist with bevel-edged lugs. A lug to lug length of 46mm and a case thickness of 15.5mm ensures a comfortable fit. The smooth bezel holds a flat crystal above a panda dial. An outer Tachymeter scale is precisely printed with thin bevel-edged baton indexes marking the hours. Lume pips sit just above the batons. At 3 o’clock a framed day-date window. The chronograph is made up of a 12-hour register at 12 o’clock and a combined 30-minute and small seconds register at 6 o’clock. Slender syringe hands have luminance-filled centers with a tapered chronograph hand. At 9 o’clock we have an applied Seiko and printed underneath “Chronograph Automatic”. On the reverse, a screw-down case back with the details of the watch engraved into it. Inside an Automatic Seiko Cal. 6138 movements. The watch comes fitted on a WatchGecko 19mm strap.
Personal Note
It's not every day you get a Seiko Chrono this good in, so when that opportunity presented itself I had no choice but to take it! Both me and Dani have been considering terrible things with our collection to see if we can fit this in, but we've decided to be good and allow someone else the opportunity to enjoy one of the best I've personally seen! So pick it up before I change my mind.
