Personal Note

Roy King was an admired British jeweller and turned to watchmaking after World War II, not far from my office here in Clerkenwell. This wonderful Roy King 'Tank' features a sterling silver case made here in England out of one piece of silver, with the dial and movement all coming out of the front. Powered by a Swiss manually wound FHF calibre, it is not lacking with the movement either. I would not hesitate to add this piece of British watchmaking history to your collection today!

He gained experience crafting bespoke pieces for notable clients, including Cartier, Rolex, and Garrard. During World War II, he served as a planning engineer for the Hurricane aircraft. After the war, he established a workshop in Watford, producing a range of items, including jewellery and watches. He collaborated with Bueche Girod to design intricate watch cases. In 1973, he acquired La Montre Royale de Geneve, a Swiss watch company. King continued to design and create watches into his eighties and opened a showroom in Mayfair in 1980. He passed away at the age of 87 in 2000.
