The Watch

Here we have a 1977 Piaget Protocole Yellow Gold Diamond Dial 99041 with a 25mm rectangular 18ct Yellow Gold case. The brushed and polished surfaces transition along distinctive lines and flat corners that lead to hidden lugs with a lug-to-lug length of 28mm and a case thickness of just 4.5mm, ensuring a comfortable cushion fit. On the right side is a coin-edged crown. The flat rectangular crystal sits above a stunning paved dial of diamonds that magically play with the light as you rotate your wrist, black baton hands sit majestically in the centre, and at noon, we have the Piaget motif completing this mesmerising dress watch. On the reverse a screwed-down case back, inside a manually wound Piaget Cal. 9P, 18 jewels, 19,800 beats per hour. This incredibly thin movement at 2mm was launched in 1957 and is still one of the thinnest mechanical movements. The watch comes fitted on a suitable 17mm leather strap with its original Piaget 18ct gold buckle.

Personal Note

Piaget is without a doubt on a roll in the collecting community at the moment and the more unusual the watch is, the better. This Piaget Protocole in 18ct yellow gold features a beautifully high-polished case with a smaller pave diamond set dial, showing only "Piaget" and the simple 2 hands for the time, a beautifully executed design. This is all powered by the famous Piaget calibre 9P, a super thin and elegant movement, perfect for a watch like this. This rare gem sold before it could even make it to the website, but rest assured I am on the hunt for more rare vintage Piaget watches.

The Brand

Piaget was founded in 1874 in the small Swiss village of La Côte-aux-Fées. Georges-Édouard Piaget had a passion for watches from a young age. He created movements from his workshop. It wasn’t until his son Timothée Piaget took over that the business saw a huge expansion, building a new manufacturing facility. In 1943, Piaget became a registered trademark. They created ultra-thin watches with their 9P Calibre, which was an incredible 2mm thick, and they still hold a world record. Today, Piaget is a subsidiary of the Swiss Richemont group. This group includes Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, IWC Schaffhausen, Panerai, Vacheron Constantin, Montblanc, Dunhill, and Chloé.
