Description

Here we have a 1976 Longines Gold Plated Stepped Hexagon 5047-2, a striking example of the bold, geometric experimentation that defined 1970s watch design. The 34mm gold-plated case features a unique hexagonal silhouette with a stepped bezel that adds architectural depth and visual interest. With a remarkably short lug-to-lug length of 34.5mm and a slender thickness of just 9.5mm, the watch wears with a distinct, integrated presence that sits flat and elegant on the wrist. On the right side, a low-profile gold-tone crown is subtly integrated into the case to preserve the hexagon's sharp lines. Beneath a hexagon-shaped crystal lies a minimalist champagne dial that perfectly complements the case's golden tones. The dial features a brushed vertical finish and is accented by simple, printed black baton indexes and matching thin needle hands, adhering to a "less is more" philosophy that allows the unusual case shape to take centre stage. The iconic Longines winged hourglass logo is applied at 12 o’clock, serving as a hallmark of the brand’s long-standing heritage in Swiss elegance. On the reverse, a stainless steel snap-on case back protects the manually wound Longines Cal. L847.4. This ultra-slim 17-jewel movement, beating at 21,600 vibrations per hour, was a mainstay of Longines' high-end dress watches during this era, chosen specifically to achieve the watch’s svelte profile. It comes paired with its original Longines 18mm strap and a gold-plated Longines pin buckle, providing a sophisticated contrast that highlights the warmth of the gold plating.

Points of Mention

This watch is sold as ‘Watch Only’ and therefore comes without its Longines box or paperwork. It comes paired with its original Longines 18mm strap and a gold-plated Longines pin buckle, both of which are showing signs of age. The watch is from Circa. 1976 and is sold in impressive, vintage condition, overall very fair condition for its age, as you can see from the photos. The watch comes with our 12-Months NON-Waterproof Warranty.

Personal Note

This is actually one I sold previously before it ever made it onto the website, so when it came back to me in part exchange, I was more than happy to have it back again. There’s just something brilliant about these slightly eccentric 1970s designs. The stepped hexagonal case has so much character, yet the minimalist dial keeps it feeling elegant rather than overdone. It wears unlike almost anything modern, sitting flat and compact on the wrist. A really cool, overlooked vintage Longines that perfectly captures the creativity of the era. Snap it up and add it to your collection today!

About Longines

Auguste Agassiz founded Longines in 1832, making it one of the oldest registered watch brands. The Longines factory was opened in 1867 in Saint-Imier, Switzerland. From this date, the name Longines was present on their dials, and the winged hourglass was engraved onto their movements. After visiting the Universal Exhibition of 1876 in the United States, Longines became a pioneer in mechanised production. In 1880, the brand name was filed with the Federal Office of Intellectual Property; later, their logo was registered in 1889. Their first wristwatch with a single pusher, the calibre 13.33z, was introduced in 1913. They became the official supplier of the International Aeronautical Federation in 1919. Lindbergh, the aviator and adventurer, worked with Longines to create the Hour Angle watch in 1927. Their first self-winding calibre 22A was produced in 1945. With continued innovation and technical achievements, Longines became the official timekeeper for Formula One in 1983 for 10 years. They also in 2009 became the official timekeeper for the French Open at Roland Garros. Purchased in 1971 by ‘Ebauches SA’, Swiss watchmakers SSIH, which owned Omega, Tissot and Lemania and ASUAG, which owned Certina, Endura, Eterna, Hamilton, Longines, Mido and Rado. were merged in 1983 to become the Swatch Group in 1998.
