The Watch
Zodiac was founded in 1882 by Ariste Calame. Their headquarters can be found in Locle Switzerland. The name Zodiac was patented in 1908 when he started to manufacture wristwatches. In 1953 we saw the introduction of the Sea Wolf, one of the first commercial purpose-built dive watches. On October 1, 2001, Fossil Inc. purchased the worldwide rights to the Zodiac brand name for approximately $4.7 million.
Here we have what is unmistakably a 70s timepiece. It’s 42mm brushed and polished stainless steel case reminds us of the helmets worn by astronauts, who were a common sight at the time as we ventured to the moon and back. The high curved sides taper over the lugs. At 51mm lug to lug length, the watch makes a real statement on the wrist. The flat crystal has rounded edges just like the TVs at the time. The dial has gradation from silvery grey to a dark blue across the center of the dial. The large baton indexes are applied to the deep sloping sides with the minute track between. At 3 o’clock a date window and at 9 o’clock a day window. Steel baton’s hands have lume infill. Its sweep of the center seconds hand is incredibly smooth. On the reverse a screw-down case back. Inside an Automatic Zodiac Cal. 86, 17 Jewels, 36,000 beats per hour. It has hacking and a quick set date function by repeated pushing in of the crown. The automatic mechanism was a joint development of Doxa, Eberhard, Favre-Leuba, Girard-Perregaux, and Zodiac. Fitted on its original full-size stainless steel brushed geometric cut 18mm bracelet with a signed folding clasp.
Personal Note
The moment I saw this INSANE watch I had to have it for stock, this is EXACTLY what KibbleWatches is about! The fun, unusual and quirky... With its super unapologetically 1970s design, its incredible gradient blue dial, its large presence on the wrist, it just really makes me smile when I put it on my wrist... Rest assured it will do exactly that for you too! Will it be for everyone? No, but that is what I love about watches, especially 1970s watches, they really are decisive!
