The Watch

Here we have a 1975 Seiko Lord Matic Special Brown Dial 5216-8020 with a 36.5mm unpolished bevel-edged stainless steel case with sloping angled lugs and crisp lines, the lug-to-lug length of 42mm and a case thickness of just 9.5mm ensure a comfortable fit on your wrist. On the right side a recessed push-pull crown. A slim bevel-edged bezel encircles the domed crystal that protects the brown linen textured dial, and an outer minute track is precisely executed with slim applied chamfer-edged baton indexes marking the hour markers. The chamfered edges catch the light as you rotate your wrist. At 3 o’clock a framed day/date with Kanji days, slender baton hands complemented by a tapered sweeping second hand, at 12 o’clock we have the applied Seiko motif “Automatic” printed underneath and at 6 o’clock and applied “LM” “Special” 23 Jewels printed underneath complete this charming dress watch. On the reverse, a screw-down case back, inside we have an automatic Seiko Cal. 5216, 23 jewels, and 28,800 beats per hour, this movement was used by Lord Matics from 1972 until 1976. The watch comes fitted on an 18mm leather strap.

Personal Note

I have been fortunate to have had a lot of vintage Seiko LMs in over the years, but this has to take the award for being my favourite yet! The subtle linen brown dial is mesmerising and adds such warmth to an already charming vintage watch that works so well on and off the wrist. I wouldn't hesitate to add this one to the cart and checking out!

The Brand

Seikos' history began in 1881 when Kintaro Hattori established the K. Hattori retail and repair store. In 1892 Seikosha was established to make wall clocks. 1895 saw the production of their first pocket watch. 1913 saw the launch of their first wristwatch, the Laurel. In 1924 the first Seiko was manufactured. Daini Seikosha (now Seiko Instruments Inc.) was established in 1937. Seiko was listed on the Tokyo stock exchange in 1949. The Suwa factory became independent and formed Suwa Seikosha Co., Ltd. (now Seiko Epson Corporation in 1959). In 1956 Seiko launched Marvel as their first true in-house-made watch; they continued to make this watch until 1959. Japan’s first chronograph watch was introduced for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics; it was called the Seiko Crown Chronograph monopusher. Not stopping there Seiko launched Japan's first true divers watch the Seiko Diver’s 150M fitted with the automatic Calibre 6217 which later was given the nickname “62MAS” by collectors. The company name was changed to the Seiko Corporation in 1990. Innovation at Seiko continues today with GPS Solar watches.
