The Watch
The Swiss watch company Tissot from Le Locle, Switzerland, was established in 1853 by Charles Félicien Tissot and his son Charles-Emile. Under Charles-Emile’s direction, they manufactured pocket watches with parts from Russia and the United States. In 1915, the company began producing wristwatches. Between 1920 and 1977, Tissot produced its movements. In 1930 to survive the 1929 crash and economic crisis they entered into an agreement with Omega to form the SSIH Group which 53 years later became the Swatch Group.
Here we have a 1974 Tissot Seven with a 38.5mm TV-shaped stainless steel case, so unapologetically 1970s in form and function. A lug-to-lug length of 42mm and a case thickness of 11mm ensures a comfortable fit on your wrist. On the right side is a signed crown, to the left of it is a Portuguese importer stamp very small and subtle. A flat crystal sits above a blue vertical brushed dial that shimmers in the light as you rotate your wrist. A minute chapter ring with applied chamfered batons has a strip of luminance down their centre marking the hours, at 3 o'clock an unusual Portuguese Day/Date. Slender white baton hands luminance tips complemented by a tapered white second hand complete this striking timepiece, at 12 o'clock an applied Tissot motif and at 6 o'clock "Seven automatic" was printed in white. On the reverse is a screw-down case back, inside an Automatic Tissot Cal. 2571. The watch comes fitted on a flowing brushed stainless steel bracelet that has a satisfying taper for a comfortable fit and a flip clasp.
Personal Note
This to me is exactly what the 1970s watch design is all about, big loud and impressive on the wrist! Whilst this isn't a small watch, with a lug to lug of only 39mm it will fit almost any wrist size comfortably and be a truly unique wearing experience for most. Plus, having a Portuguese date wheel and import stamp is rarely seen and only adds to the uniqueness of this awesome watch, give it a try and for the money, you will not be disappointed!
