Here we have a 1973 Heuer Autavia 1163 'Viceroy' MH-Bezel Auto Cal. 11, this was a promotional watch with Viceroy which was an American cigarette brand owned by the Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corporation since 1936; today, they are part of Reynolds American, a joint venture between BAT and R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. You could buy the watch for $88.00, discounted from the usual $200.00, plus a cigarette packet top. A 42.5mm “C” shaped stainless steel case curves over your wrist with stubby flat-ended lugs, its bevel-edged flanks lead to a lug-to-lug length of 47.5mm and a case thickness of 15mm, giving the watch an impressive wrist presence. Down the right side, we have the short chronograph pushers with deep knurling, and on the left side, in the centre, a signed crown sitting slightly recessed into the case. A knurled rotating stainless steel bezel has a rare black insert with silver MH - 60-minute and smaller 12-hour scale holding a domed crystal above a black bicompax reversed panda dial, a precisely executed minute track with red accents surrounds applied baton indexes tipped with Tritium marking the hours, at 3 o’clock a white 30-minute register and at 6 o’clock a framed date window and finally at 9 o’clock a white 12-hour register, slender sword hands tipped in red are complemented by a red tapered chronograph hand, at noon we have the ‘Autavia HEUER’ motif and at 6 o’clock ‘Automatic Chronograph’ complete this vintage bicompax chronograph sports watch. On the reverse, a screw-down case back, inside an automatic Heuer Cal. 11, 17 jewels, beating at 19,800 beats per hour, this early automatic chronograph was released in 1969. It was jointly developed with the help of Breitling, Hamilton-Buren and Dubois-Depraz in March 1969; the lever chronograph module is assembled on the backside of the base movement. It comes paired with a well-suited 20mm leather strap and pin buckle.
