Points of Mention

This watch is sold as "Watch Only" and, therefore, comes with no original Zenith box or Zenith paperwork. It comes paired with an 18mm vintage-style aftermarket leather strap and pin buckle. The watch is from Circa 1970s and is in used worn condition, but overall, it is in fair vintage condition, as you can see from the photographs. Scratches are to be expected to the original glass on the watch. The watch comes with our 12-Months NON-Waterproof Warranty.

The Watch

Here we have a 1970s Zenith Defy Automatic 2552 PC Date A3642. The 37mm scalloped polygon-shaped stainless steel case curves gently over your wrist, and the distinctive profile has a 44mm lug-to-lug length and a case thickness of 12.5mm, so you can be sure of a comfortable fit on the wrist. On the right side is a signed coin-edged crown, and the polished scalloped bezel holds a domed crystal. The attractive grey Fumé dial has an outer minute track with Tritium plots at the hour, applied steel cube indexes with a prominent ridge pattern marking the hours, adding interest and dimension to the dial,  and at 4.30, we have a date window. Steel sword hands have Tritium infill complemented by a counterweighted sweeping second-hand; at 12 o’clock, the Zenith motif “ Automatic” underneath and at 6 o’clock “, Defy” completes this attractive sporty, unapologetically 1970s timepiece. On the reverse is a screw-down case back with an embossed Zenith star in the centre, inside an automatic Zenith Cal. 2552 PC, 23 jewels, 21,600 beats per hour; this movement was produced in 1968 until 1971, and it comes paired with its 18mm vintage style aftermarket leather strap and pin buckle.

Personal Note

As the proud owner of a few vintage Zenith Defy references, it will come as no surprise that this is a favourite of mine and clearly many other collectors, so much so Zenith re-released it not too long ago to bring it back into the modern catalogue. If you are in the market for a vintage example, I would not hesitate on this one, it is honest and wonderful on the wrist, with a beautiful patina that has developed and the watch will continue to age gracefully!

The Brand

Zenith was founded in 1865 by 22-year-old watchmaker Georges Favre-Jacot. Its manufacturing was based in Le Locle, Switzerland. Famous Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen, who was the first person to reach the South Pole in 1911 and the North Pole in 1926, wore Zenith watches on his expeditions. In 1999, Zenith was purchased by LVMH (Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton), joining brands like TAG and Hublot. Zenith is one of the only Swiss manufacturers that still produces its own in-house movements.
