A 1970s Royce Time King Automatic, a wonderfully characterful example of the bold design experimentation that defined the decade. Its softly rounded rectangular case, hooded lugs, and integrated bracelet styling create a distinctly futuristic aesthetic that feels every bit as interesting today as it did when first produced. The silver dial remains clean and highly legible, with engraved baton markers and a practical vertical day-date display adding subtle visual intrigue. Powered by the reliable AS 1906 automatic movement and paired with its original signed bracelet, the Time King offers a fascinating glimpse into 1970s watch design, combining quirky styling, everyday practicality, and vintage charm in equal measure.

Personal Note

I've always found some of the watches from the 1970s to be among the most interesting pieces to own and wear. Brands were experimenting with shapes, proportions, and case designs in ways that simply wouldn't happen today, and the result was some wonderfully distinctive watches like this Royce Time King. The case is the real highlight here. At 37mm by 41.5mm, it hits a sweet spot of being both highly wearable and genuinely unusual, with its soft oval shape and integrated bracelet styling giving it a fantastic wrist presence. It's the sort of watch that catches the eye without ever trying too hard. What I also love is the value on offer. For relatively little money, you're getting a vintage automatic watch with its original signed bracelet, a reliable movement, and a design that stands out from the sea of round watches that dominate the market. If that interests you, snap this up today!

About Royce

Royce was a brand name created in 1935 by Walter Kocher of Eska, which was founded in 1918 by Mr Silvan Kocher, senior and his son Erwin. Their workshop, S.Kocher & Co., was built in their home village of Selzach, which is in the German part of Switzerland. The name is a phonetic abbreviation of Silvan Kocher ES & KA. In 1929, they expanded into Brazil and the USA. Due to this success, they moved their operations to Grenchen, Switzerland, in 1937. Sadly, in 1947, Silvan senior passed away, leaving the business to his 4 sons. The business continued to thrive, they were well known for making fine, distinctive and sometimes extremely thin pieces using, for example, white gold during the 60s,70s and early 80s, developing their market share in the US, Asia, Brazil and Australia. During this period, Walter Kocher founded Royce watches, primarily made for the US market. A sought-after Eska is the "Amphibian 600," from the 1960s. Roy Rogers, singer, actor, and TV host, was known for wearing and being photographed in one; it has an unusually large 46 mm bakelite bezel and an Eska cal. 600 automatic movement. It was also used by the French Navy. In 1965, Eska became part of the SAGITER group, which included several other well-known companies, including Sandoz, Invicta, Technos, and Rado. In 1975, the company became part of the Horelec group and began designing quartz watches with ETA movements inside. In 1987, Eska closed, but in 2019, to celebrate 100 years since its founding, the company was revived and introduced several new designs.
