The Watch
Here we have a 1970s Piaget Black Tie Black Tigers Eye White Gold 9562 with a 24mm square 18ct White Gold case. Elegant chamfered lines lead to straight drilled lugs with a lug-to-lug length of 28mm and a case thickness of just 5mm, ensuring a comfortable cushion fit on your wrist. On the right side is a coin-edge crown. A linen textured top surface has a polished bezel that holds a flat crystal above an unusual and beautiful black Tigers Eye dial; elegant faceted Dauphine Hands sit majestically in the centre of this sterile dial. On the reverse, a screwed-down case back, inside a manually wound Piaget Cal. 9P, 18 jewels, 19,800 beats per hour. This incredibly thin movement at 2mm was launched in 1957 and is still one of the thinnest mechanical movements. The watch comes fitted on a 14mm leather strap with its original Piaget 18ct white gold buckle.
Personal Note
Piaget is without a doubt on a roll in the market at the moment and the more unusual the watch is, the better. This Piaget Black Tie in 18ct white gold features the most beautifully textured case which contrasts perfectly against the Black Tigers Eye dial, the way it plays with the light is truly mesmerising. This rare gem is powered by the famous manually wound Piaget calibre 9P, a super thin and elegant movement. This watch sold before it had a chance to make it to the website, but rest assured I am keeping an eye out for more great vintage Piaget watches!
The Brand
Piaget was founded in 1874 in the small Swiss village of La Côte-aux-Fées. Georges-Édouard Piaget had a passion for watches from a young age. He created movements from his workshop. It wasn’t until his son Timothée Piaget took over that the business saw a huge expansion, building a new manufacturing facility. In 1943, Piaget became a registered trademark. They created ultra-thin watches with their 9P Calibre, which was an incredible 2mm thick, and they still hold a world record. Today, Piaget is a subsidiary of the Swiss Richemont group. This group includes Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, IWC Schaffhausen, Panerai, Vacheron Constantin, Montblanc, Dunhill, and Chloé.
