The Watch

Here we have a 1970s Nivada Antarctic Glacier Automatic on an NSA Bracelet with a  35.5mm stainless steel cushion case, at 11mm thickness and a lug-to-lug length of 40mm, you can be sure of a comfortable fit. Radial brushing adds interest to the case. On the right side, a signed push/pull crown. Chamfered edges with rounded corners end with straight recessed lugs. A domed crystal sits above a blue patina dial, the patina has created an interesting effect on the dial which you can see when you rotate your wrist, applied stylised Roman numerals at 12, 6, and 9 mark the hours. At 3 o’clock a framed date window, and long steel baton hands complete this minimalist dial. At 12 o’clock Nivada motifs with Automatic underneath, and at 6 o'clock the Antarctic Glacier is printed in white. On the reverse a screw-down case back with an embossed Antarctic Penguin, inside an automatic ETA 2472 with Nivada Rotor, 17 jewels, beating at a leisurely 18,000 beats per hour. The watch comes paired with an 18mm period-correct NSA stainless steel bracelet with a sprung clasp and an interesting bark pattern on the links and will fit up to a 7.15-inch wrist.

Personal Note

This beautiful Nivada Antarctic Glacier, featuring an original textured NSA bracelet, is the perfect example of how incredible vintage watches with an unusual flare can still be found at affordable prices! Under £500 this Nivada has the most beautiful and comfortable cushion case, a dial that resembles snow-covered slopes to me and a fun penguin on the case back, who doesn't love penguins?! But seriously, I would highly recommend adding this to your personal collection and you will surprise yourself by how much you end up wearing and enjoying it!

The Brand

Nivada, a Swiss watch company, was founded in the town of Grenchen, Switzerland in 1879. They saw success after World War II, producing a series of watches. Nivada was unable to sell under their name in the United States after the threat of a name-similarity lawsuit by Movado. In 1958 in time for the International Geophysical Year, Nivada supported the US Navy “Operation Deep Freeze” they created a durable waterproof, anti-magnetic watch which they named “Antarctic”. 66 countries declared a year of science. With Admiral Byrd, the watch was worn and subjected to temperature fluctuations of 100 degrees above and 40 degrees below. It was dropped, hit, snowed on, and scraped on the ice, it never missed a beat. A testament to the ruggedness of the watch.
