Description

Here we have a 1970s Enicar 'Garnix' Chronograph Silver Dial Valjoux 72, the collector's nickname Garnix is German for ‘Nothing’, with reference to its minimalist design and lack of model name on the dial. Featuring a 36.5mm round stainless steel case that sits comfortably on your wrist, thanks to the sharp-angled flat-ended lugs. Its curved, chamfered flanks lead to a lug-to-lug length of 41mm and a case thickness of 12mm. On the right side, we have the piston pushers and a signed coin-edged crown in the centre. The stepped smooth bezel holds a box-shaped crystal above a striking silver tricompax dial. A Tachymeter scale surrounds a precisely executed minute track above applied baton indexes and lume pips marking the hours. The chronograph consists of a 30-minute, a 12-hour and finally a running seconds, each sitting recessed with a concentric circular pattern and a stick hand. Slender baton hands are filled with lume and complemented by a red lollipop chronograph hand. At noon, we have the Enicar Saturn motif completing this distinctive minimalist vintage chronograph. On the reverse, a screw-down solid case back is engraved with the details of the watch and a round wave pattern, shark and Saturn in the centre. Inside a manually wound Valjoux 72, 17 jewels, 18,000 beats per hour. First introduced in 1938, this column wheel movement was made more robust than the earlier Valjoux 22. It comes paired with a well-suited 19mm strap and pin buckle.

Personal Note

Everyone loves a vintage Enicar and a Valjoux 72 chronograph, so the two together are an instant win. This is the Enicar 'Garnix', which got its nickname from the German collectors and translates to ‘Nothing’, with reference to its minimalist design and lack of model name on the dial, definitely sounds better as 'Garnix' than the Enicar 'Nothing'! A rare model and a great design, one well worth considering for the vintage collectors. Snap it up and add it to your collection today!

About Enicar

In 1914 founder Ariste Racine reversed his last name to create the brand “Enicar”. Their headquarters was in La Chaux de Fonds, Switzerland. Producing high-quality timepieces, his readable pocket watches were commonly used by European soldiers and railway crews during WWI. A new factory was built in 1930 in Bienne, Switzerland. In 1951 Enicar designed the Sherpa jet watches, which were supplied to the US Air Force during WWII. After the war, the Sherpa Collection entered the Asian market offering both advanced complications used in aviation and mountaineering. The 1956 Swiss Expedition conquered the summit of Mount Everest, equipped with Enicar chronometers. A member of the team, Ernst Reiss, praised the watch for its exceptional precision in extreme weather conditions. In 2014 Enicar celebrated its 100th anniversary.
