More Information

Description

Here we have a 1967 Longines Sport Chief, a robust yet refined timepiece that represents Longines’ golden era of versatile, everyday tool watches. Its 34mm stainless steel case features a classic round profile with sharp, tapering lugs, offering a timeless aesthetic that bridges the gap between a dress watch and a sports watch. With a slim 9mm thickness and a lug-to-lug length of 40.5mm, it provides a comfortable and balanced presence on the wrist. On the right side is a signed Longines crown, while the entire case is finished with a high polish that highlights its clean, mid-century lines. A domed acrylic crystal protects a stunning silver sunburst dial, which features applied, faceted-steel baton indices and numerals at the cardinal points alongside elegant Dauphine hands that catch the light beautifully. The "Sport Chief" signature above the 6 o'clock position adds a touch of mid-century character to the otherwise minimalist layout. On the reverse, a screw-down case back ensures better protection for the high-grade manual movement housed within. Inside, the manually wound Longines Calibre 280 features 17 jewels and beats at 19,800 vibrations per hour. This movement is renowned for its reliability and thin construction, showcasing the brand's in-house engineering prowess of the 1960s. It comes paired with its 18mm leather strap and buckle. This watch is sold with its original Longines box and signed paperwork.

Points of Mention

This watch is sold with its original Longines box and signed paperwork. It comes paired with an 18mm leather strap and a pin buckle. The watch is from September 1967 and is in worn, lovely example, clean vintage condition, but overall very fair, as you can see in the photos. The watch comes with our 12-Months NON-Waterproof Warranty.

Personal Note

The Sport Chief sits in that really appealing middle ground that Longines was so good at during the 1960s, practical enough to be worn daily, but still refined enough to work as a dress piece when needed. At 34mm, it has that classic vintage sizing that feels natural rather than small, and the proportions are helped by the slim case and well-judged lug shape. It wears easily, with just enough presence to remind you it’s a proper steel tool watch from an era when that meant something different to what it does today. The dial is simple but very effective, with the sunburst silver finish giving it life without becoming flashy. Snap up this great example with its box and signed paperwork today!

About Longines

Auguste Agassiz founded Longines in 1832 and is one of the oldest registered watch brands. The Longines factory was opened in 1867 in Saint-Imier, Switzerland. From this date, the name Longines was present on their dials, and the winged hourglass was engraved onto their movements. After visiting the Universal Exhibition of 1876 in the United States, Longines became a pioneer in mechanised production. In 1880, the brand name was filed with the Federal Office of Intellectual Property; later, their logo was registered in 1889. Their first wristwatch with a single pusher, the calibre 13.33z, was introduced in 1913. They became the official supplier of the International Aeronautical Federation in 1919. Lindbergh, the aviator and adventurer, worked with Longines to create the Hour Angle watch in 1927. Their first self-winding calibre 22A was produced in 1945. With continued innovation and technical achievements, Longines became the official timekeeper for Formula One in 1983 for 10 years. They also in 2009 became the official timekeeper for the French Open at Roland Garros. Purchased in 1971 by ‘Ebauches SA’, Swiss watchmakers SSIH, which owned Omega, Tissot and Lemania and ASUAG, which owned Certina, Endura, Eterna, Hamilton, Longines, Mido and Rado. were merged in 1983 to become the Swatch Group in 1998.
