The Watch

Here we have a rare 1st generation 1967 Doxa 'SUB 300 No-T' Professional Orange 'Thin-Case' with its characteristic 42.5mm C-shaped stainless steel “Thin case” that sits on the wrist like a cushion; it was designed and developed by Urs Eschle, who was the product manager for the original Doxa Sub and Jacques Cousteau who adopted it in his Aqua lung range, this model was only in production for one year. Its curved flanks have crisp edges leading to a lug-to-lug length of 44.5mm and a case thickness of 12.5mm, giving the watch an impressive wrist presence. On the right side is a service 'S' shield screw-down signed crown recessed into the case for protection. The patented unidirectional bezel has the U.S. Navy no decompression scales, with an outer depth scale (originally in orange numerals) and a 60-minute scale (originally in black numerals) to allow divers to gauge how much air was left in their tanks. A domed crystal sits above a striking orange dial; an outer minute track has thick black indexes filled with lume marking the hours; at 3 o’clock, a framed date window, black baton hands filled with Tritium are complemented by a black second hand complete with a square counterweight. This colour combination is highly visible when diving; a crosshair on the dial has text on the upper left side with “DOXA” and “automatic” printed, and on the lower right side, “SUB 300 professional.” On the reverse, a screw-down solid case back with the Doxa engraved vessel in full sail in the centre, inside an automatic Doxa Cal. 118, 21 jewels, beating at a leisurely 18,000 beats per hour, the movement has a base calibre ETA 2472 and was released in 1965. It comes paired with a 20mm Tropic rubber strap and pin buckle and includes its rare original Doxa sprung “Beads of Rice” bracelet, unfortunately without end links.

If you collect vintage dive watches, you need one of these in your collection, so snap it up whilst you can and who knows when another this nice will cross my desk!

The Brand

Doxa was established in 1889 in Le Locle, Switzerland, by Georges Ducommun. In 1921 Doxa became the supplier of dash clocks to Bugatti. In 1925, Georges became the vice president of the Swiss Horology Society. 1936 saw Georges' passing, and the company was now in the hands of son-in-law Jaques Nardin, the grandson of Ulysse Nardin. In 1944, the company was renamed “Manufacture des Montre DOXA”. The company was finally sold in 1997 to the Jenny family, transferring their headquarters to Bienne, Switzerland.
