Points of Mention

This watch is sold “Watch Only” and therefore comes with no original Universal Geneve box or papers. The watch comes paired with an 18mm brown suede strap. The watch is from Circa. 1960s in very fair vintage condition for its age. The reference and Serial numbers are no longer visible on the case back due to being polished one too many times, it also features a rose-gold Universal signed crown as you can see from the photographs. The watch comes with our 12-Months NON-Waterproof Warranty.

The Watch

Here we have a 1960s Universal Geneve Polerouter Date Automatic that has a stunning 34mm 18ct Yellow Gold case. The Polerouter was first introduced in 1954 and was worn by commercial flight captains for Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS). Their flights took them from Europe to America via Greenland, over the polar region hence the “Polerouter” name. The Polerouter was designed by Gérald Genta at the age of 24. Tapered twisted lugs with a lug-to-lug length of 42.5mm and a case thickness of just 9mm ensure a comfortable fit on your wrist, on the right side is a rose-gold signed crown. A thin smooth bezel holds a domed crystal above a striking gold dial, a raised outer edge with applied hour markers and at 3 o’clock a framed date window. Elegant dauphine hands are complemented by a tapered sweeping second hand. On the reverse, a screw-down polished case back, inside an automatic Universal Geneve Cal. 218-2, 28 jewels, beating at a leisurely 18,000 beats per hour. The watch comes fitted on an 18mm brown suede strap.

Personal Note

I really think we are seeing a resurgence in solid gold vintage watches, I have been trying to buy many recently and they are selling as fast as I get them in. For the longest time, I have stressed the value in solid gold watches and they still offer immense value in the market, this Universal Geneve Polerouter is the perfect example of that coming in at well under £3,000! I wouldn't hesitate on this one if you have been looking for one.

The Brand

Universal Genève was founded in 1894 in Le Locle, Switzerland as Universal Watch, by two Horology students Ulysses-Georges Perret and Numa-Emile Descombes.  By 1919 they had moved their operations to Geneva and renamed the brand Universal Genève. They have been owned by Stelux, a Hong Kong investment group, since 1989.
