The Watch

Here we have a 1960s MuDu Doublematic Textured Dial Automatic with a curvaceous 32mm round gold-plated case that comfortably sits on your wrist thanks to the sculpted tapered lugs, and its slender profile leads to a lug-to-lug length of 40mm and a case thickness of 10mm. On the right side a coin-edged signed domed crown. The smooth bezel holds a domed crystal above a stunning crosshatch textured dial. Attractive gold-plated facet dagger indexes with lume pips and Arabic “12” mark the hours, magically catching the light as you rotate your wrist; elegant gold-plated Dauphine hands filled with lume are complemented by a tapered second hand; at 12 o’clock, we have the MuDu motif and at 6 o’clock “doublematic” completing this mesmerising sophisticated dress watch. On the reverse, a screw-down stainless steel case back, engraved with the details of the watch around its edge and MuDu doublematic in the centre, inside is an automatic Felsa Cal. 4000, 17 jewels, beating at a leisurely 18,000 beats per hour.

Personal Note

This MuDu Doublematic from the 1960s is the perfect example of how you really don't have to spend a lot to get something seriously cool in the vintage world. This charming gold-plated 32mm case features a wonderfully textured dial with a subtle pink or salmon hue, a perfect contrast against the case colour. I would not hesitate to add this watch to your collection today!

The Brand

MuDu watches were officially established in Switzerland on July 5, 1957, under the name Brevinex SA, with Kurt Dubach serving as the representative in Geneva. Throughout the mid-1950s to the 1960s, these watches were clandestinely imported into the UK through various entry points, such as the ports of Southampton and the old City of Bristol docks. Instead of being sold through conventional retail channels, MuDu watches were primarily distributed in pubs and other unofficial settings. To avoid the high import duties that were in place during the postwar era, these watches were often smuggled into the UK without their straps. The UK market played a significant role in the export of MuDu watches. In 1971, a period marked by leadership changes after Charles Kühne's departure, Brevinex made another attempt at innovation in the watch industry. Eventually, the trademark 'Light Jet' was registered in March, followed by 'Brevinex Double-Chocked' in May, both of which were associated with a range of watches sold under the ETNA brand. However, the company faced challenges, leading to bankruptcy proceedings that began in 1984 and concluded in 1986.
