This striking 1960s Gruen Precision Sunburst Guilloche Manual features a beautifully proportioned 34mm case that radiates mid-century dress-watch sophistication. The design of this Gruen is outrageously good. I genuinely believe that if a more recognised name in the vintage watch world were printed on the dial, we’d be talking about a considerably more expensive watch. That’s part of the fun of vintage collecting, though, finding watches like this where the quality and design completely outweigh the value the market currently puts on the name. Dietrich Gruen, a German-born watchmaker, emigrated to the United States in the mid-19th century. On December 22, 1874, he secured his first safety-pin patent, a date that the Gruen brand recognises as its official founding date. In 1876, Gruen co-founded the Columbus Watch Company; however, this enterprise ultimately collapsed during the economic depression of 1893. In 1894, Dietrich and his son, Frederick, established D. Gruen & Son in Cincinnati, Ohio. Gruen was renowned for its innovations in the watchmaking industry, particularly in developing ultra-thin pocket and wristwatches, notably through the introduction of the esteemed Veri-Thin and Curvex lines. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, Gruen maintained manufacturing connections with Rolex, sharing movements via Aegler, which significantly influenced the design of iconic timepieces such as the Rolex Prince. During World War II, the company redirected its production efforts towards critical military flight instruments and timing devices for the Allied forces. The brand attained its peak sales in 1953; however, the founding family divested their shares shortly thereafter. As a result of growing financial pressures and changing market conditions, the original enterprise commenced dissolution and began selling off its assets by 1958. Consequently, the brand gradually diminished in prominence during the quartz revolution of the 1970s.
