Here we have a classic 1960s Gallet 'Jim Clark' Multichron 12 Chronograph EP40, which was famously worn by Jim Clark, a legendary Scottish Formula 1 driver for Team Lotus, widely considered one of the greatest of all time. He won two World Championships (1963, 1965) and famously won both the F1 title and the Indianapolis 500 in 1965, becoming a global icon before tragically dying in a 1968 F2 race. Featuring a 35mm round stainless steel case that sits comfortably on your wrist with fine tapered flat-ended lugs. A chamfered edge flows across the case, leading to a lug-to-lug length of 44.5mm and a case thickness of 12mm. On the right side are the piston chronograph pushers, and in the centre is a coin-edged crown. A smooth bezel holds a domed crystal above a striking glossy black dial. An outer silver Tachymeter scale above a Telemeter Mile scale surrounds a precisely executed minute track. Arabic numerals coated in Tritium lume mark the hours. The tricompax chronograph consists of a 30-minute register, a 12-hour register and a running seconds, each clearly marked with a steel stick hand. Elegant syringe hands filled with Tritium lume are complemented by a tapered reverse lollipop chronograph hand. At noon, the Gallet motif and ‘Swiss’ are in the centre, completing this racing-heritage vintage chronograph. On the reverse, a screw-down solid case back, inside a manually wound Excelsior Park Cal. EP40, 17 jewels, beating at a leisurely 18,000 beats per hour, a quality column wheel movement. Founded by Jules-Frédéric Jeanneret in 1866, Excelsior Park was located in La Chaux-de-Fonds, a key hub for watchmaking in the Swiss Jura Mountains. From 1918 to 1983, the company produced a range of products, including stopwatches, branded watches, and components for other well-known watch brands such as Gallet, Girard-Perregaux, and Zenith. It comes paired with a well-suited 19mm aftermarket stainless steel bracelet and folding clasp; it will fit up to a 7.1-inch wrist

Points of Mention

This watch is sold ’Watch Only’ and, therefore, comes without a Gallet box or paperwork. It comes paired with a well-suited 19mm aftermarket stainless steel bracelet and folding clasp; it will fit up to a 7.1-inch wrist. The watch is from Circa. 1960s, sold in worn vintage condition, but overall, it is in great, honest condition for its age, with a crisp case and an even patina across the dial and hands, as you can see. It comes with our 12-Months NON-Waterproof Warranty.

Personal Note

This is the wonderfully rare 1960s Gallet 'Jim Clark' Multichron 12 Chronograph, powered by the manually wound Excelsior Park calibre EP40 and cased in a super wearable 35mm crisp steel case. Nicknamed the 'Jim Clark' as the model was famously worn by Jim Clark, a legendary Scottish Formula 1 driver for Team Lotus, widely considered one of the greatest of all time. The gloss black dial with silver text is absolutely gorgeous on this watch, almost impossible to capture though, so it is definitely worth booking an appointment and seeing this one in the metal for yourself!

About Gallet

Gallet has a history going back as far as 1466, with references to a Gallet family making clocks, making it the world's oldest brand. But officially, Gallet says they were founded in 1826 when the company was registered by Julian Gallet. At that time, it was called Gallet & Cle. They are recognised as the Masters of the Chronograph. The use of the 24-hour clock has a history dating back to the 1300s when town clocks had 2 12-hour dials that over time merged into a single dial. In 1936, they introduced one of the first water-resistant watches, the MultiChron 30m with its clamshell case similar to the Rolex Oyster case. Their most famous watch is the Flying Officer chronograph launched in 1939 it was first commissioned by senator Harry S Truman who later became president of the USA, then issued to the US Air Force, it had a rotating 12-hour bezel and a clamshell case, on the dial was the world cities so a second time zone could be set, and was very popular with the American pilots of World War II. In 1940, they produced the world's first 24-hour chronograph, the MultiChron Navigator, which had an additional hand to read a 24-hour scale. In 2024, Breitling CEO George Kern announced that they are reviving Gallet, to be officially launched in 2026 as a more affordable sister brand to Breitling, offering the watches in their boutiques alongside Universal Genève, which is also set to be reintroduced officially at the same time in 2026.
