The Watch
Formerly known as the La Generale Watch Co., Louis Brandt founded it in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1848. In 1903, they renamed their company Omega until 1982, when they officially changed their name to Omega SA. They are today part of the Swiss Swatch Group. The first Omega Seamasters was based loosely around waterproof watches made for the Royal Navy. What made the Seamaster appealing was using an O-Ring gasket which gave it temperature and depth resistance. In 1955, the Swiss Laboratory for Watch Research tested out 50 Seamaster cases with a 60-meter depth rating. Omega was so confident that they strapped one to the outside of a plane and flew it over the North pole in 1956. The very year this particular watch was made.
The 34mm stainless steel case has thick lugs with a lug to lug length of 41mm and a thickness of 11.5mm for that comfortable fit on the wrist. On the right side is a signed crown. Unpolished surfaces throughout with a stepped smooth bezel. Domed crystal protects the even patina dial, an inner minute track with applied polished dagger indexes with Arabic numeral at 12. Dauphine hands with a center seconds hand. Text is kept to a minimum with Omega Automatic at 12 o’clock and Seamaster at 6 o’clock. On the reverse, we have a screw-down case back with an engraved inscription. Inside an Automatic Omega Cal. 501, 19 jewels beating at 19,800 beats per hour. The watch comes fitted on an 18mm strap with a reproduction Omega buckle.
Personal Note
Let's call this one the Tango?! Either way, what a funky dial that truly pops on this thicker lugged Seamaster, paired perfectly (In my opinion) on this strap too! Vintage Seamaster's still offer some of the very best value in the vintage world today, they are instantly recognisable and incredibly reliable, plus from a brand like Omega, all under £1,000?! But for how much longer?
