Points of Mention

This watch is sold as "Watch Only" and therefore comes with no original Longines box or Longines papers. The watch comes paired with an 18mm tan suede strap. The watch is from Circa. 1956 and is in worn, vintage condition as you can see from the photos. Overall, however, the watch is very good for its age, and the dial with its charming patina is completely original. The watch comes with our 12-Months NON-Waterproof Warranty.

The Watch

Here we have a 1956 Longines Silver Arrow Manually Wound 9104-4 with a 33.5mm polished stainless steel case, a gentle chamfered curve edge leads to a lug-to-lug length of 43.5mm and a case thickness of 10.5mm ensures a comfortable fit on your wrist. On the right side, a signed domed crown, and the smooth polished bezel holds a domed crystal above a charmingly patinated dial, applied gold-toned baton indexes have a horizontal pattern that plays with the light as you rotate your wrist, and at 3 o’clock a framed date window, attractive gold-toned Alpha hands complemented by a tapered sweeping second hand complete this charming dress watch, at 12 o’clock we have the Longines motif with “Silver Arrow” in a flowing script at 6 o’clock. On the reverse, a screw-down case back, inside a manually wound Longines Cal. 23ZSD, 17 jewel, beating at a leisurely 18,000 beats per hour, high-grade movement. The watch comes fitted on an 18mm tan-coloured suede strap.

Personal Note

If you are after a classic vintage watch with a manually wound movement and all the charm of vintage, this is the one for you! The dial has developed this incredible even patina which really draws your eyes inwards and leaves you admiring it each time you go to check the time, this is exactly what vintage is about for me, age and character that tell a story.

The Brand

Longines was founded in 1832 by Auguste Agassiz and is considered to be the oldest registered watch brand. The Longines factory was opened in 1867 in Saint-Imier Switzerland. From this date, the name Longines was present on their dials and the winged hourglass was engraved onto their movements. After visiting the Universal Exhibition of 1876 in the United States, Longines became pioneers in mechanised production. In 1880 the brand name was filed with the Federal Office of Intellectual Property; later their logo was registered in 1889. Their first wristwatch with a single pusher the calibre 13.33z was introduced in 1913. They became the official supplier for the International Aeronautical Federation in 1919. Lindbergh, the aviator and adventurer, worked with Longines to create the Hour Angle watch in 1927. Their first self-winding calibre 22A was produced in 1945. With continued innovation and technical achievements, Longines became the official timekeeper for Formula one in 1983 for 10 years. They also in 2009 became the official timekeeper for the French Open at Roland Garros. Purchased in 1971 by ‘Ebauches SA’, Swiss watchmakers SSIH who owned Omega, Tissot and Lemania and ASUAG who owned Certina, Endura, Eterna, Hamilton, Longines, Mido and Rado. were merged in 1983 to become the Swatch Group in 1998.
