Description

Here we have a charismatic 1954 Movado 'Gentleman' 18ct Yellow Gold 8423 sold with its rare original Box & Papers. A 34mm 18ct Yellow Gold French-made case that curves over your wrist with straight lugs. Sharp, crisp edges lead to a lug-to-lug length of 40mm, and a case thickness of just 8mm ensures a comfortable fit on the wrist. On the right side is a coin-edged crown, and a smooth bezel holds a domed acrylic crystal above a spectacular and unusual 18ct Yellow Gold dial. Applied 18ct Gold baton indexes mark the hours, and their chamfered edges play with the light as you rotate your wrist. In the centre, a square of Guilloche with the elegant 18ct Yellow Gold Dauphine hands and a small seconds crosshair sub-dial at 6 o’clock. On the reverse a snap-off case back, inside a bumper automatic Movado Cal. 115, 17 jewels, beating at a leisurely 18,000 beats per hour. The movement was in production from 1951 until 1959 and was one of the thinnest automatics. It comes paired with an 18mm leather strap and a plated Movado pin buckle and comes with its rare Movado presentation box and paperwork.

Points of Mention

This watch is sold with its rare original Movado box and paperwork. It comes paired with an 18mm leather strap and a plated Movado pin buckle. The watch is from July 1954 and is sold in worn, vintage condition with signs of wear and age throughout; the text has been removed in the past, unfortunately, likely during cleaning by a watchmaker, as you can see from the photographs. The watch comes with our 12-Months NON-Waterproof Warranty. Warranty.

Personal Note

As the owner of a pink gold Movado Gentleman, I am massively biased, but to me, this example offers stupendous value, especially when you consider it has its original box and signed paperwork, plus a lovely Movado buckle, too. Yes, it's far from the perfect example, with the text unfortunately missing after what I can only guess was an inexperienced watchmaker attempting to clean the dial, but this is priced in and doesn't take away from the incredible dial on the wrist. I would not hesitate to add this watch to your collection today!

About Movado

Achilles Ditesheim, at the age of 19, founded LAI Ditesheim & Freres SA in 1881. With the help of 6 watchmakers, he built a workshop in the small village of La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. In 1905, he renamed the company Movado meaning “always in motion” in the international language of Esperanto. In 1947, Nathan George Horwitt created the single-dot watch dial. In 1960, Horwitt's original design became the first watch dial ever to be accepted by the Museum of Modern Art, New York. In 2017, Movado Group purchased the OliviaBurton brand based in London. It is one of the fastest-growing fashion watch and jewellery brands in the UK. In October 2018, Movado Group acquired MVMT, which specialises in selling quartz watches, sunglasses, and jewellery. The Movado Group also owns Concord, Ebel
