Description

Here we have a rare 1953 Universal Genève "J.W. Benson London" featuring a classic 34mm stainless steel round case and showcasing a fascinating mid-century retail partnership. During this era, prestigious Swiss manufacturers like Universal Genève frequently co-signed dials with high-end retailers, and this piece bears the signature of J.W. Benson, the legendary London clockmaker and jeweller founded in 1847. A case thickness of 10.5mm and a well-proportioned lug-to-lug of 41.5mm ensure a perfectly balanced, traditional silhouette on the wrist. The timeless case shape is complemented by elegant lugs that taper to an 18mm width, offering a highly versatile choice for strap pairings. At the 3 o’clock position, a crisp push-pull crown allows for smooth daily winding and precise time adjustment. A clean, smooth bezel secures a domed crystal above a refined dial; gold-toned applied Arabic numerals and baton indexes mark the hours, gracefully balancing the iconic "Universal Genève" branding with the historic "J.W. Benson London" script. Sweeping across the mid-century layout are elegant gold hands, driven by a reliable central second hand. On the reverse, the solid snap-on case back is clearly stamped with the reference number 206514 and the unique serial number 1639894 engraved below. Inside beats the refined Universal Genève Calibre 332 manually wound movement. 17 jewels beating at a leisurely 18,000 beats per hour. This beautifully engineered, in-house calibre represents the mechanical purity of 1950s Swiss watchmaking. It comes paired on a well-suited 18mm strap and pin buckle.

Points of Mention

This watch is sold as "Watch Only" and therefore comes with no Universal Genève box or paperwork. It comes paired on a well-suited 18mm strap and pin buckle. The watch is from Circa. 1950s, and is in worn vintage condition, but overall a lovely, honest example, with a beautifully aged patina dial, and a sharp case, as you can see. The watch comes with our 12-Months NON-Waterproof Warranty.

Personal Note

The real star of this watch is undoubtedly the double-signed dial. Co-signed pieces have always held a special appeal for collectors, as they tell a much richer story than a standard production watch. They offer a fascinating glimpse into a time when prestigious retailers such as J.W. Benson would proudly place their name alongside some of Switzerland's finest manufacturers. What makes this example even more special is the condition. Double-signed dials are rare enough as it is, but finding one that has survived over seventy years with such strong printing and overall preservation is becoming increasingly difficult. So many have been refinished, damaged, or simply lost to time. I would not hesitate to add this vintage gem to your collection today!

About Universal Geneve

Universal Genève was founded in 1894 in Le Locle, Switzerland, as Universal Watch by two Horology students, Ulysse-Georges Perret and Numa-Emile Descombes. By 1919, they had moved their operations to Geneva and renamed the brand Universal Genève. They have been owned by Stelux, a Hong Kong investment group, since 1989. In December of 2023, it was announced that The Partners Group, a private equity firm that owns a majority stake in Breitling, is planning to acquire the Swiss luxury watch brand Universal Genève from Stelux Holdings. This Hong Kong-based holding company has been the brand's custodian since 1989. Over the years, Universal Genève has struggled to gain investment and marketing direction under Stelux Holdings, leading the brand to fall behind its competitors in the luxury watch market. However, the acquisition by The Partners Group is expected to change that. The move is largely driven by Georges Kern, the CEO of Breitling, who has expressed his desire to bring back the historical brand and help it regain its former glory. Kern has successfully turned around the fortunes of Breitling since he took over in 2017, and he is expected to apply the same strategy to Universal Genève. The acquisition comes at a time when there is increased interest in vintage watches, particularly those made by Universal Genève. The brand's vintage timepieces have been fetching record prices at auctions, indicating a renewed interest in the brand. With the cash infusion from The Partners Group, Universal Genève is expected to launch new models and expand its product line to cater to the growing demand for luxury vintage watches. The market is receptive to new offerings from the brand, and the acquisition is seen as a positive step towards reviving Universal Genève's reputation as a leading luxury watch brand.
