The Watch

Here we have a 1950s Heuer Chronograph 68952 with a 35mm Stainless Steel case that curves over your wrist with refined tapered lugs, a lug-to-lug length of 42mm and a case thickness of 13mm ensuring a comfortable fit. Down the right side, we have piston-style chronograph pushers and a signed push/pull crown in the centre. A smooth bevelled-edged bezel holds a domed crystal above a white dial, an outer minute track is precisely executed with tritium-coated Arabic numerals marking the hours, the bicompax chronograph consists at 3 o'clock a 30-minute register and at 9 o'clock continuous second's register. Each register is finely printed with a stick hand, and elegant thermally-blued Dauphine hands infilled with Tritium are complemented by a tapered chronograph hand. At 12 o'clock we have the Heuer motif completing this vintage bicompax chronograph. On the reverse a screw-down case back, inside a manually wound Valjoux 23, 17 jewels, beating at a leisurely 18,000 beats per hour, fitted with a later Valjoux 230 balance. A true workhorse of a column wheel chronograph that was in production from 1916 until 1974. The watch comes paired with a well-suited 19mm leather strap.

Personal Note

Whenever the opportunity comes up to buy a nice vintage Heuer Chronograph, I always try to take it! This is a wonderful example featuring a stunning dial, aged beautifully and with a nice thick 35mm case and a rarely seen screw case back! This is one to see in person for yourself, so don't hesitate to book an appointment and try this one on!

The Brand

Edouard Heuer founded The Heuer Watch Company in 1860 in St. Imier, Switzerland. Edouard invented the oscillating pinion which is still used in today's chronographs. In 1963 Jack Heuer designed the Carrera. With the assistance of Willy Breitling, they shared the development costs for the Calibre 11 in 1969, the first self-winding chronograph. Heuer was purchased by the TAG Group in 1985 changing their name to TAG Heuer. Later TAG Heuer was bought by Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy (LVMH).
