The Watch
Here we have a Rare 1930s JW Benson Hermetic with a 30mm stainless steel cushion case that sits flat on your wrist with fixed wire lugs. Jean Finger patented the hermetic two-piece watch case in 1921, it featured a screw-down bezel that created a seal to keep water and dust out, making it an early attempt at a waterproof and dustproof watch. The first adopters were Dennison and Borgel, who made cases for Rolex and other watchmakers during World War 1. Movado later came up with their own version, which included an automatic movement in 1927. This case design has a solid case back that covers the movement and is tightly secured to the top part of the case with a tension ring. A lug-to-lug length of 32mm and a case thickness of 9.5mm ensures a comfortable fit. On the right side is a crown with fine coin edging. A polished bezel holds a domed original plexiglass above a cream-toned dial, a minute track surrounds Arabic numerals filled with Radium marking the hours, at 6 o’clock a sub-seconds with thermally blued stick hand, and elegant thermally blued sword hands have been relumed, removing the original Radium, at 12 o’clock we have the JW Benson motif completing this rare dress watch. On the reverse, a screw-down case back with faint circular finishing and the serial numbers engraved into it, inside a manually wound Universal Cal. 260, signed JW Benson, 17 jewels, beating at a leisurely 18,000 beats per hour. The watch comes paired with an 18mm fold-over leather strap with a pin buckle.
Personal Note
It's not often you come across a watch like this and in this condition, so when you do, you have to leap on it! This JW Benson Hermetic Cushion Case is incredible, the size and proportion on the wrist are incredibly charming and I really do think more people need to give this size of watch a chance, if you are used to wearing huge watches then it will definitely shock the system, but personally I really enjoy wearing a smaller watch and find it looks great on my wrist.
