The Watch
Here we have a 1930s Clinton Duo-dial Doctors rectangular watch with a 22.5mm Chrome-plated rectangular case that curves over your wrist with fixed lugs. A bevel edge leads the eye towards a lug-to-lug length of 42.5mm and a case thickness of 9mm, ensuring a comfortable fit. On the right side is a coin-edged crown. A domed original acrylic crystal sits above a cream duo-dial used by Doctors and those who need to measure passing seconds accurately. A dial of two halves, the upper half has an outer minute track surrounding stylised Arabic numerals marking the hours, elegant Breguet style hands are thermally blued, the lower half has the large second's sub-dial with an outer seconds track and small Arabic numerals precisely executed with a thermally blued stick hand and was used to measure a person's respiration and pulse rates. In the centre, we have the Clinton motif, which completes this interesting vintage timepiece. On the reverse is a stainless steel snap-off case with the serial number engraved inside a manually wound ETA Cal. 717, 17 jewels. The watch comes with an 18mm leather strap with a pin buckle, which perfectly suits the watch.
Personal Note
This Clinton Doctors Duo-Dial "Tank" is incredible on the wrist and it is hard to believe it is approaching 100 years old! This feels like a real piece of history on the wrist, something that if it could talk the stories it would tell. The patina is amazing and only adds to the charm of this watch. If you are considering a piece of history for your wrist I would highly recommend considering this watch today!
The Brand
Clinton Watch Company was established by Hyman Wein, who was a Russian immigrant who lived in Chicago in 1922. The name was Trademarked in the U.S. in 1938. Rather than manufacturing his watches in-house, he imported reliable, cost-effective Swiss movements, which were then assembled and sold in the United States. In the 1960s, his son Irving Wein decided to move the company’s manufacturing to Neuchâtel, Switzerland. Sadly, like many small Swiss manufacturers in the 1970s, the company closed its operations and moved to the Virgin Islands of the U.S.
