The Watch

Majestic Watch Co was a trading name of Wittnauer & Co. In 1872 at just sixteen years old, Albert Wittnauer moved from Switzerland to New York to work for his brother-in-law, Eugene Roberts. Eugene ran a watch importing business that was focused on high-end pieces such as Vacheron & Constantin and Jaeger LeCoultre. Albert had a vision of creating his own watch brand that would suit the American market: his idea was to create an affordable Swiss watch that was still of high quality but at a lower price. In 1880 the first Wittnauer watches were being made. In that same year, F. Eugene Roberts & Co became the exclusive seller for Longines in America, this partnership would last nearly 125 years. In 1890 Eugene honoured Albert by naming his new venture "A. Wittnauer Company". The business was an instant success and attracted watchmakers from around the world to join them such as Ferdinand Haschka who became the head watchmaker for Tiffany & Co and Charles Johns who created a perpetual calendar chronometer that was shown to the world in 1939 World's fair. Sadly by 1916, the brothers had passed away and the company was left to their sister Martha. She became the first woman C.E.O of a watch company in America. She had no prior experience but still led the company for 20 years., The name Majestic on a watch dial was registered by them in New York in 1907. The trade name Majestic Watch Co was registered in 1927.

Our 1920s Silver Plated Majestic Art-Deco has a nicely engraved 27mm Silver plated Tonneau case. A lug to lug length of 35mm and a thickness of just 9mm ensures a comfortable fit on your wrist. The top of the bezel has an intricate pattern engraving holding a flat crystal. An outer minute track has large Radium coated Art Deco numeral indexes marking the hours At 6 o’clock a tonneau-shaped sub-second register with a fine hand. Cathedral hands finish this attractive dress watch. On the reverse, a snap-off case back. Inside a Manually Wound Majestic Watch Co-Signed movement. The watch comes fitted on a 16mm leather strap.

Points of Mention

This watch is sold as "Watch Only" and therefore comes with no original box or paperwork. The watch comes paired with a well-suited brown leather strap. The watch is from Circa. Late 1920s and is sold in worn, vintage condition, signs of age and wear can be seen throughout and extra care is required when wearing a watch of this age. The watch comes with our 12-Months NON-Waterproof Warranty.

Personal Note

This watch is closing in on 100 years old, making it legally antique, how insane is that? And it still works and provides us with the ability to tell time, what else is 100 years old and can still do what it was intended to do and well at that? Whilst smaller compared to watches today I know someone will love this as much as I do, I'd obviously not recommend this being an every day watch or a watch you rely on to get you somewhere on time, it is a beautiful piece of art that won't be to a COSC standard, you can expect +/- 30/45 seconds a day.
