Here we have an early World War I-era 1917 Tavannes Cal. 330 .925 Sterling Silver Trench Watch featuring a 34mm Sterling Silver round case that comfortably sits on your wrist, with delicate wired lugs. Its curved flanks lead to a lug-to-lug length of 39mm and a case thickness of 11.5mm. On the right side, a coin-edged crown. A thin, smooth bezel holds a domed crystal above a striking white enamel dial. An outer minute track surrounds large Arabic numerals painted in Radium, marking the hours. Elegant Cathedral hands filled with Radium sit majestically above a sub-second, complete with a leaf hand, which completes this distinctive early Trench watch. On the reverse, a hinged solid .925 Sterling Silver case back, inside a manually wound Tavannes Cal. 330, 15 jewel movement. It is paired with a 12mm leather bund strap; the bund strap's back can be removed.

Points of Mention

This watch is sold as "Watch only" and, therefore, comes with no original Tavannes box or paperwork. It is paired with a 12mm leather bund strap; the bund strap's back can be removed. The watch is from Circa 1917 and is sold in worn, vintage condition. Wear and age are visible throughout the watch, with an attractive enamel dial. Overall, this is an excellent example of this rare reference, fresh from a service. The watch comes with our 12-Months NON-Waterproof Warranty, though keep in mind this watch is 100+ years old.

Personal Note

I will always be amazed that you can buy a trench watch that is over 100 years old for well under £1,000 that still does its job as it was intended to when it was made. This is a wonderful 1917 Tavannes trench watch in a larger 34mm sterling silver case, and powered by a manually wound Tavannes calibre 330. I would not hesitate to add this 109-year-old watch to your collection today, a true piece of history on the wrist!

About Tavannes

The Tavannes Watch Company has a rich history. It was founded in 1891 by the talented master watchmaker Henri-Frédéric Sandoz in the small Swiss village of Tavannes, located in the Jura mountains. Together with his partner Schwob Frères, they quickly expanded their markets around the world, including in Canada, Russia, the United States, and the Far East. Over time, Tavannes Watch Co. became one of the largest watch manufacturers in the world, with five factories in Switzerland by 1938. In 1966, ASUAG (now known as SWATCH GROUP) established Chronos Holding to oversee new acquisitions, which included the Tavannes Watch Co. and its sub-brand Cyma. Chronos subsequently established Synchron Group in 1968. In 1978, ASUAG decided to dissolve the Synchron Group, and Tavannes Watch Co., along with its brands, were sold in an auction to M. Claude Guilgot. Despite this setback, the Cyma sub-brand continued to thrive, and in 2008, the Niculescu family took over the Tavannes Watch Co. brand, and the rebirth began. Today, the Tavannes Watch Co. brand continues to grow and innovate. In 2019, the company acquired UM2, a watch manufacturer based in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, which brings with it 20 years of experience in watchmaking. The Tavannes Watch Co. is committed to delivering the highest quality watches to customers around the world.
