Richard Mille a Swiss brand based in the town of Les Breuleux. After he studied marketing in Besançon, Richard Mille started work at Finhor, a local watchmaking company in 1974. The company was bought in 1981 by Matra and Richard Mille was appointed head of Matra's watchmaking business, which included Yema and Cupillard Rième. Matra's watchmaking business was then sold to Seiko, who Richard Mille left in 1992 to start a watchmaking business for jewellery firm Mauboussin. In early 1999, Richard Mille and Dominique Guenat brainstormed their ideas and they soon became the basis for the Richard Mille brand, in partnership with APR&P (Audemars Piguet, Renaud et Papi) and Guenat S.A. Montres Valgine. Over the next two years, they created their brand image, combining the worlds of high-end cars, planes and sailboats with high-tech. Designed the future Richard Mille watches and subjected them to rigorous reliability and precision testing. Dominique Guenat and Richard Mille then founded Horométrie SA – their operating company for the new Richard Mille brand which was registered on 23 October 2001 in the Swiss registry of commerce. They then later founded the Richard Mille watchmaking brand in collaboration with Swiss manufacturer Audemars Piguet, who seeing their success became a Richard Mille shareholder in 2007.

After three years of development, Richard Mille released their first watch, the RM 001 Tourbillon at Baselworld in 2001. In 2010, Richard Mille became Rafael Nadal, the Spanish tennis player's sponsor. On 27 September 2018, Richard Mille announced it would withdraw from the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) in Geneva at the end of 2018, joining its shareholder Audemars Piguet.

In October 2018, Richard Mille opened its sixth US and largest store in New York.
