José and Joana Miranda founded Isotope in 2016 based in England their brand name is derived from a scientific name for radioelements with unique half-lives found by radiochemist Frederick Soddy its meaning is "coming from the same place" in Greek. The word Isotope was suggested by a  close friend of his wife Dr Margaret Todd at a dinner party in Glasgow in 1913, and was first published in "Nature" in 1913, he was later in 1921 awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

They produce uniquely designed timepieces using traditional techniques such as enamelling and thermal heating metals.
