Hanowa was founded in Bienne, Switzerland by Hans Noll, Elisabeth Noll-Wirz in 1963. The brand name is an acronym of their names. In 1990 they bought a second brand, Swiss Military. Since 2015 Hanowa has been officially licensed with the Swiss Confederation, this allows the company to commercialise their product using the "Swiss Military" name which is owned by the Swiss government. The company distributes to over 60 countries.
