The Watch

Here, we have a charismatic 2024 Straum Jan Mayen Arctic Blue Dial Automatic. Its sculpted 39mm brushed and polished 316L stainless steel tonneau-shaped case comfortably curves over your wrist thanks to the flowing integrated bracelet and drilled lugs. A polished chamfered edge leads to a lug-to-lug length of 45.5mm and a case thickness of 11mm, giving an impressive wrist presence. On the right side is a signed screw-down crown with deep knurling protected by crown guards. The polished and brushed smooth bezel has a sunburst-brushed top surface holding a double-domed sapphire crystal AR coating on the inside, which draws the eyes toward the incredible Artic blue dial. The dial is inspired by the violent Arctic Ocean currents and icy temperatures that batter the Jan Mayen island's coastline and designed using the latest CAD design and CNC tooling to create the fumé lacquered texture and depth, coated in a shiny top coat to a glass-like finish. An outer minute track intersects with baton indexes coated in Super-LumiNova BGW9, marking the hours. Diamond-cut rhodium-plated hands are filled with the same lume and complemented by a tapered sweeping second hand. The Straum motif can be found at 12 o’clock, completing the nature-inspired icy sports watch. On the reverse, a screw-down sapphire exhibition case back with the etched details of the watch around its edge, inside an automatic La Joux-Perret Cal. G101, 24 jewels, beating at 28,800 beats per hour. La Joux-Perret designed and manufactured this quality movement in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. It is paired with its 24mm integrated 316L stainless steel bracelet secured by a push-button signed concealed butterfly clasp. It is sold with its original Straum presentation box and accessories.

Personal Note

Very few brands are able to produce dials like this Straum, especially at this price point. The impressive case and integrated bracelet design are bold, on and off the wrist, and the hyperactive blue dial just begs to be looked at and appreciated under a loupe. I would not hesitate to add this great watch to your collection today whilst you can!

The Brand

In 2017, Lasse Roxrud Farstad, an Industrial designer who graduated from the Oslo School of Architecture and Design in 2012, embarked on his drone development and filmmaking journey in 2011. It was in 2016, during a spontaneous call to Øystein, that he was presented with a mysterious request for assistance with a new product idea. Recognising their mutual passion for the outdoors, they decided to collaborate on creating a watch that would be a tribute to Norwegian nature, showcasing the country's natural beauty. This partnership led to the co-founding of Straum. Øystein Helle Husby, who had also studied at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design in 2011 and later at the Art Center College of Design in LA, had travelled extensively and worked with renowned companies such as Philips, Samsung, and Sennheiser before relocating to Singapore in 2014. Straum watches are meticulously designed in Norway and expertly manufactured in Switzerland. Their designs reflect the rugged and majestic landscapes of Norway, capturing the essence of the Norwegian wilderness.
