The Watch

Here we have a 2024 Seiko Prospex 1965 Diver's Re-Creation "62MAS" SJE093J1, launched in August 2023 and is now sold out. It celebrates the first Seiko professional dive watch, the affectionately named “62MAS”, used by the Japanese Antarctic Research Expeditions from 1966 until 1969. This watch is limited to 1461/1965 pieces and is a modern contemporary Re-Creation. The 38mm brushed and polished stainless steel case comfortably sits on the wrist with drilled flat-ended lugs; Seiko gets ergonomics so right, polished flanks lead to a lug-to-lug length of 46mm and a thickness of 12.5mm, giving the watch an impressive wrist presence; the slim case dimensions are precisely the same as the original. On the right side, at 3 o’clock, a screw-down oversized signed crown. The unidirectional bezel has a glossy metallic black insert with a 60-minute scale in silver numerals, and a box-shaped sapphire crystal AR coated on the inside sits above a brushed sunburst dark grey dial. An outer minute track surrounds applied baton indexes outlined in stainless steel coated in LumiBrite, marking the hours and, at 3 o’clock, a framed date window. Broad baton hands expertly brushed are coated in LumiBrite complemented by a lume-counterweight sweeping seconds hand. Text is applied to the dial at noon Seiko motif “Automatic” printed underneath, and at 6 o’clock, Divers 200m “Diashock 26 Jewels”. On the reverse, an etched dolphin is in the centre with the model number and number out of 1461/1965, inside an automatic Seiko Cal. 6L37, 26 jewels, 28,800 beats per hour, the movement has hand winding and hacking functionality for your convenience, introduced in July 2023. The watch comes fitted on a Seiko 19mm black silicone tropic-style strap with a signed buckle and the watch also comes with its special 1960s-style Seiko presentation box, swing tags and papers.

Personal Note

This Seiko Prospex 1965 Diver's Re-Creation, reference SJE093, feels like Seiko finally listened to what collectors truly wanted and made an almost 1:1 of the original, but with modern materials, build quality and finishing. The results are undeniable and from afar on someone's wrist I would have to double-take on whether it is just the cleanest, new old stock example out there of an original "62MAS". So, if you are after the very best modern example of the original "62MAS", it is here and the hunt is finally over, snap it up whilst you can!

The Brand

Seikos' history began in 1881 when Kintaro Hattori established the K. Hattori retail and repair store. In 1892, Seikosha was established by making wall clocks. 1895 saw the production of their first pocket watch. 1913 saw the launch of their first wristwatch, the Laurel. In 1924, the first Seiko was manufactured. Daini Seikosha (now Seiko Instruments Inc.) was established in 1937. Seiko was listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 1949. The Suwa factory became independent and formed Suwa Seikosha Co., Ltd. (now Seiko Epson Corporation in 1959). In 1956, Seiko launched Marvel as their first true in-house-made watch; they continued to make this watch until 1959. Japan’s first chronograph watch was introduced for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics; it was called the Seiko Crown Chronograph monopusher. Not stopping there, Seiko launched Japan's first true divers watch, the Seiko Diver’s 150M fitted with the automatic Caliber 6217, which later was given the nickname “62MAS” by collectors. The company name was changed to the Seiko Corporation in 1990. Innovation at Seiko continues today with GPS Solar watches.
