The Watch
Here we have a 2023 TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Skipper, initially designed by Jack Heuer when they became the official timekeepers in the 1960s for the iconic yacht the “Intrepid”, which entered the America's Cup. It has a 39mm polished and brushed stainless steel case that curves over your wrist with flat-ended tapered lugs, and a lug-to-lug length of 45.5mm and a case thickness of 13.5mm giving the watch an impressive wrist presence. We have the polished piston chronograph pushers down the right side and a signed crown at the centre. A slim, polished, smooth bezel holds a domed “Glass box” sapphire crystal, which provides a perfect view above a striking sunburst blue dynamic dial. A pronounced sloping chapter ring has the white minute track and triangle markers around its top edge, and the applied stepped baton indexes filled with Super-LumiNova sit recessed into the chapter ring, drawing the eyes towards the two recessed sub-dials; at 3 o’clock a 15-minute countdown in orange, green and teal and at 9 o’clock a 12-hour register in teal with “Skipper” inside, at 6 o’clock we have the sub-seconds and a date window perfectly balancing this colourful dial. At 12 o’clock, “Carrera Tag Heuer” polished steel baton hands are filled with Super-LumiNova and are complemented by a tapered orange chronograph hand. On the reverse, a screw-down exhibition case back with the details of the watch engraved around its edge, inside an automatic TAG Cal. TH20-06, 33 jewels, beating at 28,800 beats per hour, column wheel chronograph with a skeletonised rotor. The watch comes paired with its 21mm blue fabric strap secured by a signed push-button deployant clasp and comes with its Tag Heuer presentation box and paperwork.
Personal Note
The Skipper was initially designed by Jack Heuer when they became the official timekeepers in the 1960s for the iconic yacht the “Intrepid”, which entered the America's Cup. This reference is TAG Heuer's modern take on the watch and I feel they have done a fantastic job. Yes, it isn't a direct 1:1 homage of the original, they have changed the design and I am all for that, this is clearly inspired but designed today. Save yourself a nice chunk on retail by picking up this 2023 example today!
