The Watch

Here we have a 2023 Atelier Wen x Revolution Perception Red Limited Edition of 100 pieces, made in collaboration with Revolution magazines, a quarterly publication about luxury mechanical watches, founded by Wei Koh and first published in 2005. The beautifully sculpted brushed and polished 40mm Grade 5 Titanium case flows over your wrist thanks to the integrated geometric patterned bracelet and angled flat-ended lugs, inspired by the prominent Chinese pagodas found in their architecture. A polished bevel edge leads to a lug-to-lug length of 46.5mm and a case thickness of just 9mm ensuring a comfortable fit. On the right side is a signed screw-down crown with deep knurling for grip. A polished smooth bezel holds a double domed sapphire crystal above an incredibly intricate vibrant red, rose engine turned guilloché dial by the steady hand of Master Craftsman, Master Cheng Yu Cai, taking him 8 hours to create, the dial is made up of 36 individual sections, getting smaller as they get closer to the centre, an outer raised chapter ring has Chinese characters coated in Super-LumiNova forming a pleasing geometric pattern, polished sloped baton indexes mark the hours, elegant leaf-styled hands filled with Super-LumiNova X1 are complemented by a tapered sweeping second hand. At 12 o’clock we have the Atelier Wen motif completing this incredible hand-crafted mesmerising timepiece. On the reverse a screwed-down part exhibition case back engraved with the details of the watch and the number out of 100. Embossed CNC-machined stone guardian lion found at the entrance to Chinese Temples, when the red rotor swings into the window it resembles the mouth of the lion, a nice touch. Inside an automatic Dandong Cal. SL1588, beating at 28,800 beats per hour, is produced at the Dandong factory in the provincial capital city of Liaoning Province. The watch comes paired with its 22mm integrated Grade 5 Titanium geometric pattern bracelet and a signed button released folding deployant clasp plus a quick-release white 22mm fitted rubber strap in the box and comes with its Atelier Wen x Revolution presentation box and paperwork.

Personal Note

This is my first, and hopefully not my last, Atelier Wen I have stocked. This specific Perception model is in collaboration with Revolution, limited to just 100 watches total, and features the most striking and beautiful red dial that contrasts perfectly against the darker tone of the titanium case and bracelet. The case and bracelet shape work beautifully on the wrist, making for a super comfortable wearing experience and one well worth booking an appointment to come and try on for yourself.

The Brand

Atelier Wen is a watchmaking company based in Hong Kong that was founded in 2017 by Robin Tallendier and Wilfried Buiron, two close friends who share a passion for watches and Chinese watchmaking. While Robin's affinity for watches began at the young age of 14, he has since worked in the French Chamber of Watchmaking in Shanghai and Christie's in London. Robin is seriously interested in Chinese horology and was appointed as an "Execution Expert" at the China Horologe Association (CHA) in 2016. The CHA is an organisation that supervises and promotes the watch industry in China. Wilfred, on the other hand, is an experienced entrepreneur who has worked in multiple startups. He is responsible for Atelier Wen's manufacturing and design. The name "Atelier Wen" combines two words. "Atelier" is a French term for a workshop, while "Wen" is the Chinese word for culture. The name represents the company's commitment to blending the best of both French and Chinese cultures to create beautiful timepieces.
