The Watch

Here we have a 2021 Tribus Chronometer Black Automatic TRI-01 with a curvaceous 41mm polished and brushed stainless steel case that sits comfortably on your wrist thanks to the tapered lugs. The polished chamfer edge flanks lead to a lug-to-lug length of 50mm and a case thickness of 12mm, giving the watch an impressive vintage aesthetic. On the right side is a signed crown with knurling for grip. A smooth bezel holds a domed sapphire crystal AR coated above a striking monochrome black dial. Outer 60-minute numerals have that Bauhaus design appeal surrounding polished indexes and white lume pips above white Arabic numeral indices marking the hours, elegant slender hands filled with lume sit above a large recessed sub seconds, perfectly balancing the dial; at 12 o’clock, we have the Tribus motif and “Chronometer” underneath, completing this sophisticated dress watch. On the reverse a screwed-down exhibition case back showcasing the Automatic Sellita Cal. SW261, 31 Jewels beating at 28,800 Beats per hour, COSC Certified with hacking seconds and hand winding for your convenience, decorated in attractive perlage and Côtes de Genève. It comes paired with its 20mm quick-release Tribus rubber and leather straps and signed pin buckle. This watch is sold with its original Tribus box, travel case and Tribus paperwork.

Personal Note

This Tribus Chronometer, reference TRI-01, is the perfect example that in today's watch world creating a fantastic watch with a great design isn't enough to make it and keep going. Unfortunately, Tribus ceased operations and filed for insolvency in the summer of 2022 but was originally founded by Jake, Jonathan, and James Ward, the three sons of renowned watch entrepreneur Christopher Ward, yes the Christopher Ward himself. Whilst the company is no longer around this watch is powered by a workhorse automatic Sellita Cal. SW261 and will stand the test of time, an interesting watch that demonstrates how difficult this industry can be. Add this great example to your collection today whilst you can!

The Brand

Tribus is a watch brand that was established in September 2020 by Jake, Jonathan, and James Ward, the three sons of renowned watch entrepreneur Christopher Ward, who is also a supporter of Liverpool FC. The brand name "Tribus" is derived from the first three tribes that formed the Roman Empire. Headquartered in Liverpool, England, Tribus operates with a production facility located in Lugano, Switzerland. Each Tribus watch is crafted with Swiss-made cases and movements. The design of Tribus watches draws inspiration from the elegant dress watches of the 1940s and 1950s, embodying a unique “retro-temporary” style. However, despite its promising beginnings, Tribus ceased operations and filed for insolvency in the summer of 2022.
